Achieve full range with this 2-way PA speaker from Peavey. It's redesigned to be lighter while producing clearer, more full-bodied sound.

The legendary SP 5 has been a mainstay enclosure for more than two decades. Peavey's engineering team has completely redesigned this new SP 5 making it lighter weight and more robust sounding than ever. This two-way full range enclosure will easily handle 800 Watts of program power and peaks up to 1600 Watts. Featuring a 15 in. Scorpion Plus woofer with field replaceable basket, the SP 5 delivers plenty of bone-crushing bottom end while the exclusive Quadratic Throat Waveguide technology dramatically reduces horn distortion offering a much clearer sound that aims sound directly at the audience, not over their heads. Constructed of birch ply with carpet covering, the SP 5 is ready for just about any road gig or permanent install.

I was considering the SP2 speakers, but after using these with my current equipment, I do not think I will be looking for anything else for my uses. These have outperformed my expectations. If I was doing larger venues, I might consider the QW line, but I believe that I will not need new/other PA speakers in the foreseeable future. I am over 50 years old now, and my playing out days are regrettably limited. These will probably be the last ones that I buy as I am not going to be rich and famous! LOL!

Sound
I purchased a pair of these to run pole mounted over a pair of EV Eliminator i subs I've had for over ten years (another great product in themselves!). The subs are powered by a PV2600 amp and the SP5's are powered by a Behringer EP2500 amp. They produce a lot of bass without the subs, but this setup is exceptional for sound quality. I use a Soundcraft M12 mixer, and the sound was so good with everything on the board set flat last night at the first gig with them I found I did not even need to hook up by 31 band graphic EQ. Clear, Clean, Loud. No farting out, no mater how hard they were driven. We play loud classic to modern rock, with the kick drum agressively mic'd. All I could say was WOW! I retired an old set of Peavey SP3's from the late 80's with this purchase. I am simply amazed at the power, punch, and clarity these offer.

Features
It's a PA cab. Two paralleled 1/4" inputs, and a speakon connector. read more They are not set up to biamp the speaker, but honestly they sound really good in full range mode. The horn is designed to angle the sound down towards the audience when pole mounted, and after walking around the venue last night while listening to recorded music during a break, I can say that they are very effective. The highs could be heard no matter where I was in the bar (3000 square foot building). They were not harsh sounding, but very natural, again with NO EQ used! The built in pole mounts are really useful, and looks great over the Eliminators. They are quite heavy and require two folks to pole mount, but after 30+ years of using Peavey products, I don't mind heavy. To me that equals durability. These are no longer mad of birch, so they are a bit heavier than the previous version of this speaker.

Ease of Use
Plug and play.

Quality
Well built, quality construction and materials. A good old USA Peavey product from the deep South. I don't like the plastic corners, but they appear to be quality. The new full steel grill is an improvement over the previous model.

Value
I'm sure there are cheaper comparable products, but this is an excellent product and American made to boot. I have actually seen a copy of these speakers on line. They look exactly the same (except for the aluminum Scorpion driver frame), and the asking price is about 1/2. I doubt that they are the same on the inside though. I shopped around for some time and found that you can get a deal on the SP5 speakers from both brick and mortar stores and online retailers - just ask. zZounds made me a deal that I could not beat, they actually beat everybody's else best deal!

Manufacturer Support
I haven't dealt with Peavey regarding this particular product. Previous contacts with their customer service/tech department regarding other Peavey gear I own have been outstanding. You actually get to talk to a human on the telephone, and they answer emails promptly. Very helpful and knowledgeable regarding their products.

The Wow Factor
it is a nice looking speaker, but looks in this type of product do not really influence my buying decisions, performance specs and reliability mean more to me...
