The VP89 is available with long, medium, and short capsules in three model variations: VP89L, VP89M, and VP89S. The VP89 microphone has a tighter acceptance angle (is more directional) when used with longer capsules:
- VP89S (Short barrel) offers the widest aperture for the greatest degree of ambience in near-field target range -- ideal for camera mounting or discreet mounting
- VP89M (Medium barrel) offers a wider target aperture for greater degree of ambience -- ideal for audience response, talk shows, and live concerts, while maintaining a narrow pickup angle and superior off-axis rejection
- VP89L (Long barrel) offers an extremely narrow pickup angle for targeting sound sources over long distances, ideal for recording sporting events, wildlife, ENG, and field recording.
