Manufacturer's Description for Behringer EPX2000 Power Amplifier (2000 Watts)

Power amps have always been heavy, mainly because of the massive transformers and heat sinks. Behringer's new EPX Series amps are based on groundbreaking switch-mode technology which eliminates the heavy transformer. As a result, the amp weighs around 40% less - in fact the EPX2000 is just 22 lbs./10.10 kg, and you can lift it up almost with one finger. Best of all our super-reliable switch-mode power supply provides an even tighter bass performance as it can deliver ultra-high peak currents.

In a Class of Their Own

The secret to the EPX series' incredible power-to-weight ratio is their use of a switching-mode power supply combined with Class-H topology. Switching-mode power supplies work on demand. Instead of constantly working at full power and dissipating excess power as heat, they only ramp up the power output when needed--thousands of times per second. Considerably more efficient than traditional power supplies, switching-mode power supplies are small and light, yet deliver ample power.

Think of a Class H amp as a car with two engines (in amps, you call them "rails"). One engine runs all the time. The other runs only when musical peaks demand extra power output. An EPX Class H amp only generates a fraction more power than is immediately needed while the output stage operates at its maximum efficiency all the time.

And just like in today's hybrid cars, the efficiency of this dual system is far greater than having one engine or rail that must operate all the time. EPX amps don't waste power. Class H amps don't waste power, require much smaller heat sinks and much lighter power transformers.

Accelerated Transient Response Delivers the Knock-Out Punch
It takes huge pulses of energy (current and voltage) to propel a woofer cone out fast enough to match a bass beat. That's called Transient Response and it's the holy grail of amp designers. By carefully selecting transistors with extremely high slew rates and optimizing other proprietary parts of our circuitry, our amps are able to react instantly to even the most demanding electronic bass impulses. If the woofers in your PA system can keep up, your audience will hear a tighter, crisper, more natural sound.

Instead of operating relatively continuously like Class AB circuits, Class H amps, which were first described in NASA technology (U.S. patent 3,319,175), feature rail tracking for effectively modulating the power supply rails with only the peaks of the input signal. This technology has revolutionized pro audio amp designs with its outstanding performance and efficiency. When combined with switching-mode power supplies that replace heavy toroid transformers, our new designs provide more dynamic punch and, because they are so much more efficient, run cooler and don't require huge, heavy heat sinks.

BEHRINGER didn't invent Class H technology, but our R&D Department has been working for years to perfect our own version, creating lightweight amps that run cool and also achieve our goal of Accelerated Transient Response.

Everything You Need
The simple front panel controls of these amps give you all of your sound's vital signs at a glance. After pressing the Power Button, the POWER LED will light when the amp is ready for action. Both channels have independent gain dials as well as clip LEDs that indicate when the signal is distorted and you need to reduce the gain. There are also SIGNAL LEDs that light up when a signal is present at the input.

Panel Discussion
The EPX series' INPUTs accept balanced XLR, 1/4" TRS, and unbalanced 1/4" TS and RCA connections. Take your pick of professional locking speaker outputs or touch-proof binding posts to securely connect speakers.

A panel of switches found on the back offers an array of cool options applicable to both channels. The Clip Limiter lets you get even more out of the amplifier without overdriving either it or your speaker system. Built-in circuitry automatically senses when the amp is being overdriven into "clipping" and then momentarily reduces the input level to avoid clipping distortion. This all happens in a few thousandths of a second, so it's an inaudible way of avoiding audible clipping distortion. Of course, you can turn the Limiter off if you're feeling lucky.

The same panel contains the switches that allow you to put these amps to work in either mono, stereo (two-channel mode) or bridge mode, which is always in mono. A built-in CROSSOVER switch lets you select the point at which highs and lows are separated (CH1<100Hz / CH2>100 Hz or FULLRANGE).

BEHRINGER's EPX line is built for the working musician. It's much easier to transport than a conventional AB power amp, it packs ample power, it's got a built-in crossover and limiter, and it's built to last through all the rigors of the road. Plus its light price tag will leave you with enough cash left over to acquire more stuff to amplify! Check out an EPX and find out why BEHRINGER power amps are among the most popular on Earth.

4.5 out of 5 (2 ratings) Rate and Review This Product
zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Good value, Easy to move around, Obnoxiously loud fans !"
Sound: Bear in mind that all my comments relate to my using this amp to power a passive home theater subwoofer, and it does do a fairly good job of this, and although i cannot test the validity of this statement -the power ratings have to be highly exaggerated ! I slotted this Behringer into a hole previously occupied by a 15 year old classic Adcom 555II which is rated at 200Watts x2 into 8ohms and 400Watts x2 into 4 ohms. The Behringer should have it beat by a healthy margin, but it does not! The power game is one played by pretenders in the audiophile world ! Feature: Again, in my intended use, this amp is raw. The positive first though - great connection panel on the rear with balanced, RCAs and 1/4" inputs. Standard speaker binding post and pro locking outputs. Minimal, but adequate crossover and a limit switch circuit that is a plus, although I haven't come close to hitting on it yet! Negatives - The twin fans are loud! It has no current sensing or 12Volt turn on circuit, which in my application is a headache i must find a workaround for. You must use the front power button, prepare yourself for, and tolerate, a turn on thump (what is this, the seventies? volume down boys). The rack mount tabs are not removeable, so it looks like crap in my rack. Oh, and did i say the fans are loud! They run at a constant speed instead of being switched by a temperature sensing circuit, and will bother most everyone i would imagine ! Fortunately in my case, all my gear is in a media closet outside the theater, but that is rarely going to be the case. There is no way I could be in the same room with this amp trying to listen to delicate audio detail. I've read about user modifications for this, but they will void any warranty of course. Pro users will mostly override this noise with some of their own though ! I've yet to get this thing even warm, so bet it can really take a pounding before these fans are even necessary for cooling ! Ease of Use: This amp is the lightest by far that i have ever owned, and in my game that usually relates to poor quality and power limitations, but this amp does not employ the typical massive toroidal power transformers found in audiophile gear. Connections and switches are very easy to use. Pro users that move their gear every gig will love this amp. Quality: Seems to be very strong and solid, albiet its light weight. Cannot speak for quality longevity though. I do have to keep reminding myself this is a $300 amp i'm talking about here. For the price, there is not much to complain about I guess! Value: Again, for $300, it is a steal for a new product. Though if I was looking to run anything but subs, this would not have made my short list! Manufacturer Support: I chose 10 because i have to choose something! Have not used support but have heard you get to talk with a human right off the bat. Big Big Plus if this is true. The Wow Factor: Not pretty, unless you are into flashing lights, which in retrospect, pro users are ! Overall: I freely admit my application is not the absolute intended use by the designer, but my budget at this time is not unfortunately in the Krell ballpark ! My mindset is however in this ballpark, so my expectations are probably unreasonable - I get that. If i had to be in the room with these fans though, i would not be writing this review as i would already have shipped it back !

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful. "Amazing sound at an amazing price!"
Sound: I had a little trepidation about buying this amp because I'm used to using the old school amps with the big capacitors and the big transformer that weigh more than a bus. Still, from what I read, Behringer amps had a great reputation, and the specs on this amp are excellent, so I decided to give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did. The sound is tight and it has power to spare. I'm a bass player, and my tone has never had such punch or clarity. Feature: I'm only giving this a 9 for two reasons. This amp has every input on it you could possibly want, and it has the terminal / banana plug outputs (does anyone actually use these?), but it doesn't have 1/4" outputs. All it has are Speakon outputs, which meant I had to go spend another $63 on new speaker cables before I could use the amp. I'm not sure why there aren't 1/4" outputs in addition to the Speakon outs, but it would have saved me some extra money if there had been. Other than that, everything's great. The amp also has two cooling fans, which are surprisingly loud You don't notice it once you're playing, but man, when you first turn it on and everything's quiet, it's very noticeable when you're near the amp. Ease of Use: Plug in your cables and go. A power switch and two sensitivity knobs in the front, limiter and crossover switches in the back. Nothing to it! Quality: This amp seems to be extremely well constructed. It's a light yet solid unit and the sensitivity knobs are tight and notched. They're also inset, so it's unlikely they'd ever be able to be turned accidentally by someone or something rubbing against them. You set them where you want them and they'll stay put until you decide otherwise. As for the power, as I said above, it has power to spare. These kinds of amps feed power directly, and I've heard of some that don't always do it all that well. This amp has no problem at all, no matter how much I crank it. Value: Man, for the price, you just can't beat this amp. It's an amazing value and sounds absolutely incredible. Manufacturer Support: Haven't had to use support. I doubt I ever will. If I do though, I'm sure it'll be fine. Behringer's been around a long time and they make lots of different stuff, so I'm sure they have a decent support system in place. The Wow Factor: It looks great in the rack, sounds phenomenal and if it ever crapped out on me I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with a new one. Overall: I used my previous power amp for about 22 years before it finally started having some crackling issues in the sound. I'm so happy with the sound on this amp, if it holds up as well as my previous one, I'm sure I'll be using it just as long, if not longer.
