Overview
With the number of digital field recorders out there, what sets the TASCAM DR-1 apart? The answer might as well be "the TASCAM name." Starting with the introduction of the Portastudio in 1979, TASCAM has catered to the needs of musicians, and this focus is what makes the DR-1 unique; with a full complement of tools for singers and songwriters, the DR-1 is truly the musician's field recorder.

Start With Great Sound

"Features" wouldn't mean a thing without a solid foundation, so the DR-1 starts off by simply being a great field recorder. While there's an optional external microphone input, the two built-in electret condenser microphones are robust and detailed. Whether capturing natural soundscapes, your band's live performances, or your bourgeoning musical ideas, the DR-1 records every audible nuance. For added versatility, TASCAM mounted those mics on a swivel chassis, facilitating table-top recording. Those detailed mics are well served by the TASCAM DR-1's ability to record in up to 48k/24-bit resolution--that's better than CD-quality digital audio. Of course, if you want more recording time, the DR-1 can switch to compressed MP3 quality recordings. . . but don't worry too much about space. The DR-1 comes with a 1GB SD card, and is compatible with up to 32GB SDHC cards for hours upon hours of uncompressed audio recording.

User-Friendly Features

In addition to a straight-forward user interface and menu system (made even easier to navigate by the unit's jog… read more wheel control), the DR-1 boasts a variety of additional features. Simple inclusions like a built-in tuner and overdubbing capabilities make jotting ideas down quickly that much easier. To top off this impressive features list, TASCAM threw in a vocal cancel function, turning the DR-1 into an auto-karaoke machine, except you can use it to practice singing along to your own songs!

Expand Your Options With The TASCAM Field Pack

While the TASCAM DR-1 is already an impressive self-contained portable recorder, the optional Field Pack turns it into a professional live performance capture device. The add-on pack is centered around the TMST1 stereo microphone, a beautifully detailed and flexible stereo mic. The TMST1 allows you to position the microphone independently from the DR-1 itself, but it also adds sophisticated mid-side stereo recording capabilities. By adjusting the mid-side parameters, the TMST1's stereo field can be narrowed or widened to fine-tune your audio image. Include the audience ambience in your recordings, or focus in on a soloist. The TMST1 turns your DR-1 into a formidable recording tool. The Field Pack also includes the matching cable and stand for the TMST1, as well as an additional 1GB SD card for even more recording time. . . don't miss any of the performance for lack of memory!

With so many smart, field-friendly features, the TASCAM DR-1 must have other field recorder designers saying "why didn't we think of that?" All you'll be saying is "thanks, TASCAM!" read less

TASCAM's Description
TASCAM DR1 Portable Digital Recorder
The TASCAM DR-1 puts world-dominating power into your pocket. Its built-in stereo microphones include a unique variable angle mechanism, so you can set it to record from any angle. The DR-1 is the first portable recorder to include a 1GB card, so you'll have plenty of CD or MP3-quality recording time for long rehearsals and concerts. And with a street price of just $299, everyone's gonna want one.A pair of microphones are mounted on a variable angle mechanism, which allows the recorder to record from almost any angle. The built-in stereo condenser microphones are arranged for a wide stereo image, and an external mic can also be used. The unit includes a generous 1GB SD card for hours of recording at MP3 or WAV file formats. The DR-1 also includes auto gain control and analog limiting for easy setup and a low-frequency cutoff to eliminate handling or wind noise.
Optional TASCAM Field Pack Information
The Field Pack matches TASCAM's best-selling DR-1 portable recorder with the TMST1 stereo microphone. The DR-1 includes its own microphones of course, a pair of condensers in A-B pattern for a natural recording pattern. It captures in MP3 or WAV format, 24-bit or 16-bit, and includes a 1GB SD Card to start recording right away. The DR-1 includes an Overdub mode with effects to record over your previous recording to make a complete production.
Adding the TMST1 gives added flexibility while recording to the DR-1. The mic can be placed in the perfect spot while the recorder stays near to press record. The Mid-side side of the TMST1 allows the stereo image to be widened, to capture more ambience or audience sound, or narrowed to reduce background noise. It plugs into the DR-1's 1/8-inch mic input - or any other recorder - for a detailed stereo sound with perfect mono compatibility.
Ideal for rehearsals and concerts, capture every note with the affordable TASCAM Field Pack
Optional Pack includes: TASCAM DR-1 recorder, TMST1 stereo microphone, 1GB SD card, mic cable and stand.

"What a great gadget"
I 'll give it a nine. Theres always room for improvement, but it appears to all be little things to me. Its main function is as a stereo recorder and as that it is Great!
Sound
Outsatnding quality at the 24 bit setting to .wav
Features
I mainly have been using this for stereo recordings, for which it sounds awesome. The tuner appears very accurate and the speed function is great for transcribing solos. The FX are clean and accurate, maybe a little noisey. I haven't used the overdub function.
Ease of Use
Simple, intuitive user friendly
Quality
So far so good. Smart looking and appears durable.
