MXR Phase 95 Mini Phaser Pedal

Love the Phase 90 and Phase 45, but need to save precious pedalboard real estate? Have no fear. The Phase 95 combines both circuits into a tiny enclosure.

MXR knows phasers. The Phase 90's compact size, superior construction, and refined sound put MXR on the map, and it set the standard by which all other phasers are judged. Two years later, MXR released the Phase 45--a mellower version of the effect favored for its ability to easily blend into a band's mix.

Now, you can get both iconic circuits in a single pedal while tightening up your pedalboard at the same time. The Phase 95 combines the Phase 45 and Phase 90 circuits in a mini housing with about half the footprint of a standard MXR pedal. The 45/90 switch toggles between the Phase 45 mode's subtle two-stage phasing and the Phase 90 mode's more pronounced four-stage phasing, while the Script switch toggles between two phasing styles. The Phase 95 is set to modern style phasing by default, which relies on feedback to create light harmonic distortion and gives the effect a more accentuated swoosh. Engaging the Script switch removes feedback for a lusher, more subdued sound with higher headroom and greater clarity. The familiar Speed control sets the rate of the effect.

The Phase 95 may be small, but it's full of rich phase tones, and it'll take a beating on the road.

Features:

- Combines MXR's most iconic phase circuits in a single mini housing
- About half the footprint of a standard MXR pedal
- 45/90 switch toggles between Phase 45 and Phase 90 circuits
- Script removes feedback for a subtler vintage sound

I've owned several phasers over the years; a 1983 MXR Series 2000 Phaser, a Boss Ph-2 Super Phaser and the MXR Zakk Wylde Phase 90. None of them ever really wowed me. (The Series 2000 was the best sounding of the bunch but even it left me underwhelmed.)

Sound
My quest has been that subtle phaser sound as heard on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Tuesday's Gone'. The three phasers I had were all too, uh, pungent. Too strong. Then I learned the difference between MXR's 'Script Logo' & 'Block Logo' phasers; the Block Logo has a feedback stage that wasn't a part of the original Script Logo models. (I don't know how to properly define this 'feedback' other than to say it's too much of a good thing.) I just know I prefer the sound of the Script Logo.

Features
The MXR Phase 95 is one seriously awesome pedal. It combines the uber-subtle 'Phase 45' and the more pronounced 'Phase 90' with a switch to toggle between the two phaser modes and another switch to toggle between the Script Logo and Block Logo configurations. Four pedals in one wonderfully small package.

Ease of Use
This pedal has LED's to show you which of the four modes you are using. It also features another LED that flashes at the speed of the sweep. Another WONDERFUL aspect of this "mini pedal" is the location of the 9v power supply input. It's at the back of the pedal instead of on the side. The pedal can only be powered via a power supply as there read more is no battery compartment. That may be an inconvenience to some but I "daisy chain" my pedals. (I have 25+ FX pedals and good 9v batteries aren't cheap.)

Quality
This pedal appears to be VERY well built. I own eleven Dunlop Era MXR pedals and I've never once had a problem with any of them.

Value
I bought this pedal as a discounted 'blemished' model but it looked unused. It was pristine with all paperwork, etc. Even at the regular price this pedal represents the ultimate in value - it's four pedals in one.

Manufacturer Support
I've never had to contact MXR. For their track record of quality pedals they merit more stars than this page allows.

The Wow Factor
Wow Factor... Hmmm, with this pedal I was finally able to achieve the phaser sound I have been wanting for years. Wow, that's awesome.
