43 different "REMS" modeling effects. 10 mic & body effects. Notch filter.
Overview
The new AX3A electro-acoustic model makes it easy to enjoy high-quality acoustic sounds.
The AX3G/AX3B are extremely popular among guitarists and bassists for the high quality sound, superb ease of operation, and flexible parameters that they pack into a compact body. This series is now joined by the AX3A, a dedicated model for electric-acoustic guitars. It provides a wide range of effects powered by "REMS" technology, including mic and body effects optimized for acoustic sounds, letting you transform the sometimes sterile-sounding output of a piezo pickup into a natural and mellow tone, and making it easy to perform with a wonderfully detailed acoustic sound. There's a built-in notch filter effect that cuts the point at which acoustic feedback occurs, giving this unit wide usefulness not only for practicing at home, but also for recording and in live performances.
Features
43 different "REMS" modeling effects inherited from the AX series.
10 mic & body effects that replicate the micing setups of experienced professionals and provide many types of acoustic guitar sounds.
Notch filter effect that lets you cut the frequency point at which acoustic feedback occurs.
You can store 40 programs containing the sounds you create using the modeling effects. Together with the additional 40 preset programs, this gives you access to 80 programs for immediate use.
Each effect provides full editing that rivals dedicated units, for a high degree of sound-creating flexibility.
Auto chromatic… read more tuner with mute function.
Two-way power supply lets you operate on batteries or using a separately sold AC adapter.
You can connect an optional EXP-2 foot controller or XVP-10 expression/volume pedal and use it as a volume or wah pedal.
Completely covers all the effects you need for acoustic sound
The AX3A contains a wide-ranging variety of effects powered by "REMS" modeling technology and taken from the AX series. In addition to compressor and limiter, and the other standard effects you expect, they include several types of stereo chorus, spatial-type effects such as echo, delay, and reverb, as well as unusual and distinctive effects such as a drone effect that adds a tamboura-like drone to your playing. You can create a wide variety of your own sounds without impairing the natural tone of your acoustic instrument.
Faithful simulation of professional micing techniques captures the body resonances of high-quality acoustic guitars
The built-in body effect simulates the body resonances and sympathetic vibration of famous acoustic guitars. Covering instruments that range from classic brands of the past to cutting-edge models, the modeling meticulously recreates the sonic characters arising from differences in guitar construction and body size. The output of a piezo pickup, which sometimes sounds cold and lifeless, can be given the distinctive woody richness and resonances that are distinctive of an acoustic guitar, producing a highly natural and mellow sound. Unique types such as resonator guitars and nylon-string guitars are also included, letting you play an incredible variety of acoustic sounds from a single guitar. There are also mic effects that simulate the depth and spatiality of sounds recorded through a high-quality condenser mic. Professional micing techniques that require years of experience and expensive equipment can be easily experienced by anyone using the AX3A, delivering top-flight professional acoustic sounds even through a direct line connection.
80 programs (40 user / 40 preset) for immediate use
Up to seven different "REMS" modeling effects can be used simultaneously, and internal memory will accept 40 programs you create using these effects. Another 40 preset programs covering a wide range of styles are also provided, giving you 80 programs for immediate selection.
Notch filter effect lets you cut the frequency point at which acoustic feedback occurs
The AX3A contains a notch filter effect that is exactly what you need to combat acoustic feedback. You can use it to quickly and precisely cut the precise frequency point at which feedback is happening, ensuring that you'll be able to perform with the best possible sound.
Full editing with sound-editing flexibility that rivals dedicated units
Each effect type provides a rich array of parameters rivaling even dedicated units. The optimal parameter values are automatically chosen when you select an effect, making it easy even for beginners to get the best possible sound. The most important parameter for each effect is accessible as the "main parameter" with direct access immediately after selecting the effect. Additional "sub-parameters" are also provided, giving you more detailed control of your sound, all with a simple and intuitive interface that lets you create and control your sounds easily and understandably.
Auto chromatic tuner and additional support functions
The AX3A contains an auto chromatic tuner, so you won't need to provide a tuner separately. It has a mute mode that lets you tune without producing sound from your amp or other connection destination, making it easy to tune on stage. You can connect an optional expression pedal to the AX3A and use it to control wah or volume for an even broader range of expressive possibilities. In a compact size that easily fits into the pocket of a gig bag, and the convenience of battery-powered operation, the AX3A is the ideal way to obtain top-quality acoustic sound in any situation, at home, in the studio, or on stage.

i don't think it's a Variax acoustic but it costs much less. i have a very nice piezo acoustic--plays nice, sounds nice direct and mic'd up but i wanted some different sounds. with this i can add it to the mic'd and/or direct sound or use it on it's own. the effects are, well, effective and i think i'll be getting some really good results soon. it's a no-brainer to learn and yet there is some deep editing available for the tweakers. i have a Line6 POD, BASS POD and POD XTLive so this little bugger is in good company and i think it will hold it's own.
Sound
some of the fx are pretty lame but those are the ones that wouldn't interest me anyway (ring modulator, filtron etc.) the acoustic oriented fx (dynamics, modulations, delays, reverbs) are really very good. the acoustic sims sound great with my guitar (my guitar is pretty good sounding by itself too so it could be garbage in garbage out, i don't know.) it makes some noise with some settings (most noticeably the xciter pre fx but from what i've experienced so far the noise is manageable when recording and probably would not be a problem live. there is a noise reduction feature which seems to help but i haven't worked with this much. overall though sounds great or i'd be returning it.
Features
would like to see l/r outputs--some of the fx are stereo so i'm going to get a 1/4" stereo splitter cable to run to my mixer but i'd much rather see dual outputs. also,… read more does not come with a power supply and no power switch so the guitar cable is the switch while running on batteries and i hate that. other than that great number of fx (more than are really practical) and solid guitar sims (notable exception--no 12-string:<)
Ease of Use
nice little user interface. had it figured out nearly completely without opening the manual. very effective editing from a few dials and buttons. well thought out--large knob selects what you are editing, the two circular buttons select from the matrix, the small knob controls the primary tweak for that effect and some effects have up to four more parameters available through the Param selector. it's fun for the whole family! as a footpedal you've basically got preset up/down and the circular buttons move you through banks of 10. you have 40 user locations and 40 presets.
Quality
it's plastic but generally feels solid and would probably take some abuse. i don't like jacks that aren't nutted into a faceplate on any audio gear.
Value
10 decent acoustic guitar sounds plus effects for $80 is a good value.
Manufacturer Support
i just got this thing today but i've had the portable PXR4 recorder for a year or more and nothing has gone wrong. the manual is all the help you should need. the korg website is good too.
The Wow Factor
well, it's brown. i guess that says "acoustic" but it looks alot like a turd next to my other shiny gear. however, i do think it's technically a sweat thing--you may not have mine.
