i don't think it's a Variax acoustic but it costs much less. i have a very nice piezo acoustic--plays nice, sounds nice direct and mic'd up but i wanted some different sounds. with this i can add it to the mic'd and/or direct sound or use it on it's own. the effects are, well, effective and i think i'll be getting some really good results soon. it's a no-brainer to learn and yet there is some deep editing available for the tweakers. i have a Line6 POD, BASS POD and POD XTLive so this little bugger is in good company and i think it will hold it's own.
Sound
some of the fx are pretty lame but those are the ones that wouldn't interest me anyway (ring modulator, filtron etc.) the acoustic oriented fx (dynamics, modulations, delays, reverbs) are really very good. the acoustic sims sound great with my guitar (my guitar is pretty good sounding by itself too so it could be garbage in garbage out, i don't know.) it makes some noise with some settings (most noticeably the xciter pre fx but from what i've experienced so far the noise is manageable when recording and probably would not be a problem live. there is a noise reduction feature which seems to help but i haven't worked with this much. overall though sounds great or i'd be returning it.
Features
would like to see l/r outputs--some of the fx are stereo so i'm going to get a 1/4" stereo splitter cable to run to my mixer but i'd much rather see dual outputs. also, does not come with a power supply and no power switch so the guitar cable is the switch while running on batteries and i hate that. other than that great number of fx (more than are really practical) and solid guitar sims (notable exception--no 12-string:<)
Ease of Use
nice little user interface. had it figured out nearly completely without opening the manual. very effective editing from a few dials and buttons. well thought out--large knob selects what you are editing, the two circular buttons select from the matrix, the small knob controls the primary tweak for that effect and some effects have up to four more parameters available through the Param selector. it's fun for the whole family! as a footpedal you've basically got preset up/down and the circular buttons move you through banks of 10. you have 40 user locations and 40 presets.
Quality
it's plastic but generally feels solid and would probably take some abuse. i don't like jacks that aren't nutted into a faceplate on any audio gear.
Value
10 decent acoustic guitar sounds plus effects for $80 is a good value.
Manufacturer Support
i just got this thing today but i've had the portable PXR4 recorder for a year or more and nothing has gone wrong. the manual is all the help you should need. the korg website is good too.
The Wow Factor
well, it's brown. i guess that says "acoustic" but it looks alot like a turd next to my other shiny gear. however, i do think it's technically a sweat thing--you may not have mine.
