Freeze, Retain, and Sustain Your Sound With This EHX StompboxPlug your guitar, bass, or whatever instrument you play into the Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer pedal, and you'll immediately introduce some new ton your game. This sampling pedal is great for solo acts; you can use it to hold out chords while playing a melody before making a chord change. If you use this pedal in conjunction with a distortion pedal, reverb pedal, octave pedal, or anything else really, then you'll be able to get quite experimental and produce sounds you thought your axe could never make. The Freeze features fast, slow, and latch settings, as well as an easy-to-use effect level control dial.
Freeze Your Sound: Sustain Chords and Drones -- Play Melodies On TopHaving a sampling pedal like the Freeze Sound Retainer as part of your arsenal of effects will give you another level of control for performances, recording sessions, or even just experimenting around by yourself. Aside from getting a little sonically weird, you can also use this pedal as a simple vamp generator if you need a repeating droning sound while playing licks or melodies. This is perfect if you're learning modes and need the tonic note, or key, to stay consistent while changing through the modes with respect to that root note or key -- a nice little exercise for learning some melodic theory.
Fast, Slow, and Latch SettingsThe Electro-Harmonix Freeze pedal features three settings for you to employ: fast, slow and latch. The fast and slow settings determine how long the delay on your signal lasts. Simply step down to engage the sustain, and lift your foot up to end it. Flip the switch over to the latch setting, and you're in for some completely continuous sustain. This setting is perfect if you want an interesting atmospheric sound to envelop your song from beginning to end during your performance.
Great Addition to Any PedalboardThis pedal is lightweight, durable, compact, and pedalboard-friendly. Using this tool in conjunction with an octave pedal, reverb pedal, distortion pedal, delay pedal, and a whole host of others will get you sounds that most people wouldn't know an axe could produce. Fire your guitar through this pedal, and let the endless sustain begin!

zZounds Expert Review
Looking for a pedal that would give me a brand-new sound that I could easily implement with my other pedals, the Electro-Harmonix Freeze pedal caught me off guard. At first glance, you'll probably just think the Freeze is a simple sustainer pedal -- but it's much more than that when you combine it with other pedals. Whether you are running the Freeze through an effects loop, or after another pedal, you are able to mix and match and get sounds you would not expect. I was able to mix the Freeze up with another EHX pedal (the Deluxe Memory Boy) and got a great analog tone from it. Using the different options on the decay rate switch -- slow, fast, or latch -- you can make smooth transitions that are perfect for performing as a one-man band. If you are looking for a versatile endless-sustain pedal to add to your usual setup, pick this one. You will not be disappointed.
