Description

Using dynamic phrases based on real performances by top studio bass players in 30 styles, Virtual Bassist covers almost every conceivable music genre, delivering top class bass sounds and phrases for rock, pop, reggae, metal and hip hop to name just a few. Playing Virtual Bassist is just as easy as playing the keys on your MIDI keyboard: each style contains 2 octaves of phrases of varying complexity and fills.

The innovative GrooveMatch Technology allows users to mould the Virtual Bassist bass line performance to existing drum grooves either by flexibly editing notes or shifting the overall groove of any phrase. Owners of Groove Agent, Virtual Guitarist or Virtual Guitarist Electric Edition will find pre-matched grooves for phrases and patterns in those instruments, creating a tightly integrated drum, bass and guitar rhythm section.

Virtual Bassist comes with a full range of outstanding sound-shaping features, including six high-quality virtual stomp box effects optimized for bass guitar, a choice of tube or solid state amp head, bass cabinets and microphones as well as mic positioning options to build ideal bass guitar parts. The included effects can also be used on any other audio channel in music production environments such as Steinberg's Cubase SX3.

Steinberg Virtual Bassist Plug-In Reviews

"Virtual Bass With Only One String"
Feature:
ALl of the features (effects, compression, amplification sim - solid state and tube - etc) are great sounding, easy to use, and well done. So why only a 5? You do not realize until you are using the plug-in that it is incomplete - actually using the plug-in as a virtual instrument gives you about 8 frets worth of sound. That's pretty much it. Basically, that makes everything, all the bells and whistles, all the great fidelity, everything - USELESS - unless you buy it specifically for the use of phrases, which I hardly find a use for.

Quality:
Again, I praise the sound but give it a 5 on quality - why? Because alot of people who are interested in this kind of product have only marginal to no interest in phrases and loops, and this product is marketed as a VIRTUAL INSTRUMENT, which is only technically true. It is a Virtual Bass with only one string. Not what alot of people paid for. An incomplete virtual bass, no matter how good those few frets sound, is still an example of poor quality.

Value:
If you don't mind molding your songwriting to an inflexible pre-recorded phrase, or are just into that sampling stuff I guess its okay. Otherwise, just buy a decent bass and actually play it.

Desirability:
The interface looks "neat" I guess, but otherwise its just a piece of software and a dongle. What else is it supposed to be?

Sound:
The sound is crisp, clear, and authentic. Once in a mix, it can easily fool even trained ears. I would say that it sounds pretty much how anyone who would want a product like this hopes it might sound. It is clearer sounding and more versatile (in terms of electric bass sounds) than Broomstick Bass.

Ease of Use:
If you have difficulties with it, you are probably new to VSTs and compter recording environments in general.

Support:
The support forums will get you an answer to your question most of the time, so long as you don't show up throwing a virtual tantrum, but it sure as hell can't restore the missing functionality of this plug-in.

Overall:
Steinberg dropped the ball. Maybe they were behind schedule and the deadline was inflexible, who knows. All I know is that Broomstick Bass does what Steinberg apparently could not, so i'll stick with it.

"Great sound but how do you record a track with it?????"
Feature:
Lots of cool features

Quality:
Can't give it high marks on quality. It's only got one octave.

Value:
I'd give this about a 5 because of the obvious limitations having only a one octave range. And how the hell do you record a track with this thing????? Haven't gotten it to output audio to track.

Desirability:
Just isnt't fully functional.

Sound:
Sounds great

Ease of Use:
Easy to set up and use

Support:
Support sucks

Overall:
I'm not satisfied.
