zZounds Gear Experts Say...
Origin Effects' take on the classic '76 studio compressor, this limited-run reissue of the large-format Cali76 pedal offers a high-end Lundahl transformer.
Overview
This is a reissue of the original, large-format Cali76 compressor with high-spec transformer output stage and balanced line out, optimised for guitar, bass and studio use, in a strictly limited run of 200 units for the TX-L model. When Origin launched the Cali76 back in 2012, it was, and still is, like nothing else on the market. With its large, brushed aluminium enclosure, studio-grade circuitry and astonishingly transparent sound, the Cali76 broke the mould in every department.
The Cali76-TX-L features a high-end Lundahl transformer, offering the ultra-linear performance, transparent low end and flat phase response that many users prefer for use in the studio and on bass guitar.
The pedal also features a 12-stage LED gain reduction meter, a balanced line-level/DI output, and a high/low gain switch - useful for pushing the transformer harder.
- Ultra fast "FET" response
- Attack & Release controls
- Studio-grade "discrete" preamplifier
- Rugged VU-style meter
- Low noise electronics
- Class-A discrete output-amplifier driving transformer
- Dual, low-impedance outputs (via audio transformer)
- Unbalanced instrument-level output
- Balanced Line-DI output (Please note that output signal level does not conform to the +4dBm professional studio convention, and so some additional amplification may be required.)
- Ground-lift function to eliminate ground induced hum
- Gain-switch adjusts transformer saturation
- Auto-Shutdown -… read more preserves battery operation
- PSU Spec. Min: 13mA @ 9V / 72mA @ 18V (PSU not included)
- Suggested PSU Rating: 200mA for optimum start-up
- Designed and built in England read less

Specs
- Controls:
- OUTPUT: overall output level
- INPUT/COMP: sets how much signal passes the threshold and is compressed
- RATIO: sets the amount of attenuation from anywhere between 4:1 and 20:1
- ATTACK: determines the time taken for the compressor to react to the presence of a signal
- RELEASE: sets the duration of gain reduction before recovering to no compression
- GAIN: pushes the transformer into saturated overdrive
- PAD: drops the signal from LINE/DI output by around 28dB
- GND: disconnects the ground connection to solve ground-loop-related issues

I know it's not a common opinion, but I love compressors. I have been tone chasing them as much as overdrives and fuzzes! This baby is the klon of comps, well the lure of the klon anyway. Performance wise it is in a class all by itself. When I bought it I was of the mind set of if your going big, go biggest! So I picked the Lundahl version because it was most expensive. I am a lead guitar player so some say that the iron transformer is the more favorable to guitar. Which makes me want one of them too! But this is so awesome sounding I can't imagine how anything could be any better. And I like it being built for studio use. It is a dream collection pedal, that deserves to be!
Musical Style:
Rock, Blues, Country.. I love any with guitar.. I have been playing for 35 years, professionally in my 20s, a few more years dur
