Excellent yet affordable weighted-action synth.

Based on the core technology from the highly acclaimed EX Series, the S80 sets a new standard for affordable 88-note weighted-action synthesizers. But the S80 isn't just a synthesizer. It's designed to serve as the heart of an expandable modular synthesis system.

An 88-note, Weighted-Action Synthesizer with MIDI Master Keyboard Functions
The S80 features a weighted action that reproduces the touch and feel of an acoustic piano. The extensive MIDI Master keyboard functions include 4 programmable zones with 128 Storable Setups. Great Sounds based on the EX Series with new Stereo Pianos, Strings, and Brass.

The sounds in the S80 were designed specifically to fit the needs of the American market. So when Yamaha started to define what new sounds to focus on the first 4 choices were simple. The Pianos, Strings, Brass, and Organs sounds in the S80 are simply the best available on the market today. Of course, there's also tons of great synth and dance sounds, many of which are based on the highly acclaimed EX Series.

64-Note Polyphony with Multi-Mode 64 Resonant Filters
We think that resonant filters are an essential feature for any keyboard that calls itself a synthesizer. The S80 has multi-mode filters that allow you to have combination of resonant low pass and high pass filters on each note. That's one of the reasons the analog synth sounds in the S80 are so phat and warm.

Modular Synthesis System Expansion via PLG Series Boards (Up to 128-Note Polyphony)
The S80 can be expanded read more using the Yamaha Modular Synthesis Plug-In System. These don't just add new sounds, but new synthesis techniques, polyphony, and DSP effects to your system. You can add two of these inexpensive, user-installable boards to customize the S80 to your needs. Currently available plug-ins are PLG100VH (Vocal Harmony), PLG150VL (Virtual Acoustic Physical Modeling), PLG150AN (Physically Modeled Analog Synthesis), PLG150FM (the equivalent of a DX7), PLG100XG (with 32 voices of polyphony and 3 more effect blocks), and the PLG150PF Piano plug-in board featuring 64 voices of polyphony.

A/D Input for Processing a Microphone through the Internal Effects
The addition of an external input allows you to connect a microphone and add effects like Compression and Reverb. This is perfect for the singer/songwriter who wants to write songs using the incredible Stereo Pianos in the S80 while singing along in headphones. With the addition of the VH board you can even add harmonies.
