With the portable, pocket-sized TASCAM DP-0004, it's like carrying a recording studio everywhere you go.
Overview
Remember when recording studios used to take up entire buildings? Just like punch-card computers, multitrack recorders have become smaller and more convenient. That's why TASCAM calls this little guy a Pocketstudio. Even more portable than the famed Portastudio, the TASCAM DP-004 Pocketstudio still gives you fully featured, four-track recording, along with basic mixing functions and digital effects, all in uncompressed, CD-quality audio.
Recordings Done Right, And Right Quick
Like the Portastudio before it, the TASCAM Pocketstudio represents not only a convenient four-track recording medium, but a streamlined approach to multi-tracking. It's what made the Portastudio such a revolution when it was introduced in 1979, and that legacy is apparent in the Pocketstudio. The simple interface means there's no obstacles to quickly recording even your most sophisticated ideas. Simply assign one of the two inputs to a track, arm it, and record. Layering additional tracks is as simple as reassigning the inputs to different tracks, arming those, and hitting record again. Because the DP-004 records digitally, there's no waiting to for tape to rewind between takes, and you have the luxury of undoing a mistake, or redoing an unintentional undo. Working in the digital realm also means you can instantly bounce all four tracks to tracks 3 and 4 to make room for virtually infinite additional overdubbing and no signal degradation -- try doing that with tape. And don't worry about running out of… read more memory. Your DP-004 ships with a 1GB SD card, and is compatible with up to 32GB SDHC cards for hours and hours of uncompressed audio recording. Level and pan control for each track allows for basic mixing, so you can get a better idea of what your ideas might sound like fully formed.
Pristine Recording, With Or Without A Microphone
They wouldn't have called it the Pocketstudio if you couldn't truly carry everything you need for recording in one pocket. Not only is the DP-004 smaller than your average paperback romance novel, but it also has built-in stereo microphones that are detailed enough to capture every facet of your musical ideas. There's also a pair of 1/4-inch inputs for recording using your own mics, and you can even switch the inputs to handle Hi-Z sources for direct recording of electric guitars and basses. Heck, you don't even need headphones; there's an internal speaker for basic monitoring of your on-the-go recordings. When you're packing a DP-004, the world is your studio.
The Convenience Of USB
Want to share your musical ideas with like-minded musicians? The TASCAM Pocketstudio makes transferring audio files easy, thanks to its fast and reliable USB 2.0 port. And because the DP-004 records in uncompressed WAV format, your audio files are universally compatible with all operating systems and just about any editing software out there. Just drag and drop files into a program like Cubase, Garageband, or Pro Tools and easily expand your Pocketstudio recordings into bigger musical projects.
Built-in mics, stable SD and SDHC memory, intuitive interface, the convenience of digital recording, and the reliability of the TASCAM name, all in a four-track recorder that fits in your pocket. The TASCAM DP-004 Pocketstudio -- it's the start of something big. read less

"SO worth the money!"

For my needs, there will be no need to upgrade, especially when you can bounce tracks.
Sound
It's hard to imagine better sound without spending much much more for a multi-track recorder. Both my acoustic guitars sound like they sound, and isn't that what you're looking for? Same for my electric guitar. So far I've only recorded in my living room, with no attempt to "studioize" the room. I was dreading having to purchase additional mics, pre-convinced that the built-in condenser mics would be poor quality, because how could they be any good when the whole deal is $150.00? So wrong. Really good sound capture from both vocals, and my Epiphone EJ-200.
Features
The redo and return to zero are great, especially compared to my old Tascam Porta-4 from the early 90's. Wait, wait, wait for the cassette to rewind. The metronome is very useful. If the ability to export MP3 as well as wav file were added, that would be cool.
Ease of Use
There are some functions I have not used, but I was able easily to insert silence to eliminate chair squeak and repositioning my guitar before starting to record. I read the basic instructions twice before I took it out of the box, then once while looking at the controls, and boom!... I was off and recording.
Quality
Seems to be well made. I think the Tascam projection of how long the batteries last is off quite a bit, but I'm… read more using house brand batteries and might get better results with premium batteries.
Value
I have nothing modern to compare it to, but on cyber-Sunday I paid 136.45 for what a competitor wanted $199.99 for. VERY much worth the price!
Manufacturer Support
No experience.
The Wow Factor
Until you have 4 arms and hands, it's the only good way to accompany yourself.
