The SE Silver Sky Maple is a familiar iteration of the original Silver Sky model that was first introduced with John Mayer in 2018. This workhorse guitar provides ample tone and playability in three distinct colors, delivering looks, feel, and sound. The PRS SE Silver Sky Maple starts with a poplar body, bolt-on maple neck, and maple fretboard with PRS trademark bird inlays. The 22-fret, 25.5" scale length neck features the original 635JM carve and an 8.5" fretboard radius, so the PRS SE Silver Sky will feel right at home. Plug it in, and the three single-coil 635JM "S" pickups will bark and sing.

This guitar is anchored by a two-point steel tremolo, synthetic bone nut, and vintage-style tuners. Other design features include the PRS Silver Sky inverted headstock shape and the PRS double-acting truss rod (accessible from the front of the headstock for ease of use). Ships with PRS Classic 10-46 strings and gig bag.

"Great Tone, Not So Great QC"

I bought this guitar as something that would give me a totally different sound and feel from my Core and S2 PRS guitars (35th Anniversary Custom 24; Custom 22; and CE 22 Maple Top S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow). This guitar definitely checks that box for me. It provides the classic single coil Strat tone, and dare I say, it out Strats a Fender Player Strat in my opinion. The pickups are clear and articulate and they have a great dynamic range when adjusting the volume and tone controls. While many are no crazy about the PRS twist on the Strat shape, I really dig the look. I also really love the neck joint on this guitar, it makes upper fret access far easier than your standard square Fender neck joint. The guitar balances well when sitting or standing and it's a nice comfortable light weight. The neck has a nice profile for me, as I tend to like chunkier necks (Pattern Regular on my 35th Anniversary and S2 and Wide/Fat on both 22 fret Core guitars). Now lets get to the not so great things with this guitar. The first guitar I received had razor sharp fret ends, the back of the neck felt a little furry for lack of a better term, and the frets were NOT well finished as bending felt rough and gritty. To make matters worse, there was a pronounced dead spot on the third and fourth string around the 13th and 14th frets. Adjustment to the saddle height and neck relief didn't do anything to improve the situation. I have to further gig the first guitar that I received for a poorly finished read more nut. I had to smooth out the treble side of the nut at the side as it was not flush to the edge of the fretboard. I must, however, give enormous credit to zZounds for their expediency in getting an exchange taken care of for me. On to the second guitar that was received, much of the same with the razor sharp fret ends, the back of the neck did not have the "furry" feeling to it, and there were no dead spots. After a couple of minor setup adjustments for intonation, a decent chunk of time smoothing and polishing a few rough frets and the razor blade fret edges, and a restring, the guitar is good to go. I must say that I'm very disappointed that PRS QC seems to be so lacking on these guitars as every other PRS I've played and owned over the years has been absolutely flawless and has needed nothing more than a few minor setup adjustments to accommodate my preferred strings and tunings. Bottom line, if you're in the market for a great sounding S type guitar that's light weight and not your typical Fender, this is worth a look, but be prepared to spend some time doing the QC job that ought to be happening prior to the guitar being shipped to a dealer and ultimately a customer.
