Starting from scratch the packaging is substantial and the guitar ships enclosed in it's very well padded gig bag. These may seem like small things but the attention to this detail is impressive since it assures the guitar stands a far better chance of arrive undamaged.....and it did. It also tends to indicate their attention to other details in the design and construction process. With the exception of a few fret ends that will need some attention otherwise the guitar was of the quality expected out of PRS and Cor-Tek it's builder. I've purchased a number of models (PRS and G&L) built by Cor-Tek and have never been disappointed in their overall quality and attention to detail. I'm always confident when ordering one online sight unseen. The Silver Sky I bought is Stone Blue, both attractive and different from what I more typically buy and weighs just 7.2 lbs Since I was buying it to replace a Strat I'd traded for an amp I wanted a direct comparison of the Silver Sky to it's closest Fender models a Player and Player II which I was able to do locally. I played each for quite awhile and came away feeling there was nothing about the Silver Sky that I didn't like just a little more. The neck profile is more similar to the chunkier early 60s Oval "C" on the Strat I'd traded and the satin finish on the neck nice as well. It has the right "grip" even for a thumb up player like me. The overall setup was good needing only to lower the saddles to my preferred string height. The neck relief was proper and the fret work was level and well polished. Most who compare these models to Fenders will notice a difference in the sound of the pickups. They are bolder and more full sounding with stronger mids. Less like the '50s vintage pickups used in many Fender and Squier models and more like '60s vintage pickups. Since I'm often playing through a Deluxe Reverb I enjoy the overall "bolder" tonality more. The electronics and controls work well and feel very smooth. Nice attention to detail here as well. I also like having a tone control for the bridge pickup. It makes it far more usable and also impacts position two positively. The noise floor of these pickups in positions one, three, and five is actually quite low which I attribute somewhat to the shielding but more so to the pickup design and build itself.I'll just finish by saying that anyone interested in buying a Strat or Strat style guitar should consider a Silver Sky as well. It's a very worthy competitor to the Fender Strats in it's price range especially when one also considers the high quality padded gig bag PRS includes. And as usual zZounds sales support, order processing, and fast shipping are top shelf and always appreciated. I have bought from them numerous times and have never been disappointed in any way. They have over time become my dealer of choice whenever I buy new. Thank you rep Daniel and zZounds.

"Great Tone, Not So Great QC"

I bought this guitar as something that would give me a totally different sound and feel from my Core and S2 PRS guitars (35th Anniversary Custom 24; Custom 22; and CE 22 Maple Top S2 Custom 22 Semi-Hollow). This guitar definitely checks that box for me. It provides the classic single coil Strat tone, and dare I say, it out Strats a Fender Player Strat in my opinion. The pickups are clear and articulate and they have a great dynamic range when adjusting the volume and tone controls. While many are no crazy about the PRS twist on the Strat shape, I really dig the look. I also really love the neck joint on this guitar, it makes upper fret access far easier than your standard square Fender neck joint. The guitar balances well when sitting or standing and it's a nice comfortable light weight. The neck has a nice profile for me, as I tend to like chunkier necks (Pattern Regular on my 35th Anniversary and S2 and Wide/Fat on both 22 fret Core guitars). Now lets get to the not so great things with this guitar. The first guitar I received had razor sharp fret ends, the back of the neck felt a little furry for lack of a better term, and the frets were NOT well finished as bending felt rough and gritty. To make matters worse, there was a pronounced dead spot on the third and fourth string around the 13th and 14th frets. Adjustment to the saddle height and neck relief didn't do anything to improve the situation. I have to further gig the first guitar that I received for a poorly finished nut. I had to smooth out the treble side of the nut at the side as it was not flush to the edge of the fretboard. I must, however, give enormous credit to zZounds for their expediency in getting an exchange taken care of for me. On to the second guitar that was received, much of the same with the razor sharp fret ends, the back of the neck did not have the "furry" feeling to it, and there were no dead spots. After a couple of minor setup adjustments for intonation, a decent chunk of time smoothing and polishing a few rough frets and the razor blade fret edges, and a restring, the guitar is good to go. I must say that I'm very disappointed that PRS QC seems to be so lacking on these guitars as every other PRS I've played and owned over the years has been absolutely flawless and has needed nothing more than a few minor setup adjustments to accommodate my preferred strings and tunings. Bottom line, if you're in the market for a great sounding S type guitar that's light weight and not your typical Fender, this is worth a look, but be prepared to spend some time doing the QC job that ought to be happening prior to the guitar being shipped to a dealer and ultimately a customer.

I've owned teles and starts. This guitar is amazing. The factory setup is awesomey. The grounding keeps the pickups from buzzing badly. The electronics great and stable. The gigbag it comes with is very nice. One caviot: Don't pull the vibrato up much. That warning is not found easily within the docs. This guitar is a steal at this price
