The Responsive Hammer Compact (RH Compact) action gives every key a grade-weighted, spring-less hammer response that gets progressively heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble, just like an acoustic grand, with a matte key surface for secure fingering during long sessions. Kawai's Harmonic Imaging sound engine draws on samples of the concert grand pianos, layered across 192 notes of polyphony so chords, pedaling, and sustained passages ring out without unwanted cutoffs.

Beyond its core piano voice, the ES120 includes 25 onboard voices covering electric pianos, organs, strings, bass, and more, along with 100 drum rhythm patterns and 6 reverb types for practicing along with a beat or adding ambience to a performance. Dual and Split modes let two voices layer together or split across the keyboard, and Virtual Technician gives 17 adjustable parameters -- from touch curve to string resonance -- for shaping the instrument's feel and tone via the free PianoRemote app over Bluetooth.
