Fishman Fluence Greg Koch Gristle-Tone P90 Pickup

Get all the P90 tones Greg Koch loves in one pickup! The Fishman Fluence Greg Koch P90 pickups offer three tonal voices for the bridge and neck positions.

All of Greg's favorite P90 tones in one pickup!

Nowhere are the intrinsic benefits of Fluence technology more up front and apparent then when applied to the P90. Unlike stacked "humbucker" P90 variants which can actually aggravate certain problems while curing others, the noise, the acoustic feedback, the hum, the inductance issues caused by guitar cables, amp and effect inputs... with Fluence, all of it is eliminated, leaving pure, unadulterated, Multi-Voice tone.

With the success of his Signature Gristle-Tone pickup set for Telecaster guitars, it was no surprise when Greg came asking to explore the possibilities of Fluence technology applied to the P90. Like his Fluence Gristle-Tone Tele set, Greg's Signature Series P90s are deeply rooted in tradition, and then un-rooted in sounds that only Greg can conjure - satisfying all of Greg's lascivious P90 needs!
The phenomenon that is Gristlemaster Greg Koch is the result of his monster talent and king-sized personality colliding with a mix of musical styles, guitars, and of course, pickups - to achieve the sounds in his head.

"Great pickups, but you need to know more"

I bought a set of these pickups in January 2022. Shipping was the usual zZounds crazy fast, so kudos for that. I bought these to replace the p90s in an Epiphone Les Paul Special TV Yellow guitar. First thing you need to know is that this set comes with only 3 pots, the 2 push pull tone pots and only one standard volume pot. All pots are 25K. So if you want it in a Les Paul or any guitar with 2 volume pots, you will need to purchase a 25K volume pot separately. I got one from Stew Mac because they were on back order from zZounds. The pots on this set work fine in a flat top guitar without a cap, but if you have a Les Paul or other guitar with a cap, the pots on this set will likely be too short, so you will need to purchase a set of long pots. I believe they can be purchased directly from Fishman.Next quirk is that theses pickups don't come with the springs that fit over the screws that you use to adjust pickup height, so don't throw away the screws from the pickups you're replacing. Finally, at least in my guitar, I had to remove the foam pad at the bottom of the neck pickup cavity in order to have the pickup for. This is because in the LP special TV yellow, the hole that allows passage of the wires from the neck pickup out to the control cavity is located on the low E string side of the pickup cavity (the side closest to the ceiling when holding the guitar in playing position). The pickup wires connect via a quick connect to this side of the pickup so they end up getting bunched read more up under the pickup in order to get out the hole to the control cavity and if you don't remove that foam, the pickup will not seat. With the foam out the pickup sits well. This is not an issue with the bridge pickup because the hole exiting the bridge pickup cavity is at the opposite end and the wires from the pickup do not need to bunch up under the pickup.Installation is fairly straightforward if you know how to solder. The knobs on my import epiphone fit fine on to the pot shafts. The pickups sound great. Absolutely no hum. It's a little weird that there's no hum but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The 3 voicings are subtle but definitely discernible. The neck pickup and middle position sound amazing. So rich and complex. Pickups are very responsive to your touch and the volume control. They have really improved the versatility of this guitar.
