zZounds Gear Experts Say...
Looking for a tride-and-true rock companion for a steal? This Les Paul Junior combines a mahogany body with P-90 PRO pickups for bold, gritty tones.
Overview
The Les Paul Junior was first introduced in 1954 during Gibson's first Golden Era. It was designed as an affordable, high-quality, solidbody electric guitar option suitable for students and beginners. Compared to the standard Les Paul models of the early and mid-1950s, the Les Paul Junior was stripped down to the essentials, with the carved maple top, fretboard and body top binding, second pickup and its controls, and the more ornate decorative features of the Les Paul Standard removed, leaving a slab mahogany body and single pickup-equipped model that could be priced more attractively for beginners.
However, it wasn't long before players of all levels of experience and ability, including many professional musicians, discovered the magic of this erstwhile "student model" and began to utilize it on recordings and stages worldwide, performing in a broad range of musical genres. Famous Les Paul Junior players include Leslie West of Mountain, Martin Barre of Jethro Tull, Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke, Glenn Frey of the Eagles, Johnny Thunders, John Lennon, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, and Steve Howe, among others.
The appeal? The Les Paul Junior's outward simplicity disguises the wealth of tonal options available from the single pickup, volume control, and tone control; by varying where you place the picking hand, as well as the settings on the master volume and tone knobs, you can coax a surprisingly wide range of different, and very cool, tones out of a Junior.

The headstock is equipped with Epiphone Deluxe tuners with ivory buttons for a vintage-approved appearance, along with a Graph Tech nut, ensuring stable tuning. The strings are anchored at the other end with a compensated Lightning Bar wraparound bridge that is bolted directly into the mahogany body, providing the exceptional sustain and knockout tone that the Les Paul Junior is renowned for.

"It's a $529 Guitar"

This guitar is fairly good based on the purchase price. The fit, finish, frets are good. It required a good set up, action & intonation BUT it is a $529 guitar, would expect more from a guitar twice this price, but this is not the case. I have owned Gibsons which required this much attention. The pickup is OK, not great. Being a P-90 dogear, what you get is what you get. It needs to be closer to the strings (ordered shim kit at $22 to achieve this) but pup is a little muddy with fair amount of gain and too much treble on high E, B & G string, BUT again, a $529 guitar. The tuners are fair, but the E, A & D fall out regularly, But a $529 guitar. My opinion: the neck and fret job are great, and this guitar may fulfill certain niches as is, but it will be an awesome guitar with better tuners, possibly a more period correct wiring kit and an upgraded pickup, set at the correct height. My plan is to upgrade with an Emerson Gibson Les Paul wiring kit (with oil & paper Bumblebee cap) a Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90 pup & upgraded tuners, possibly Gotoh vintage locking tuners, to enhance the sound quality, gain/tone variation and tuning stability bringing to guitar much closer, if not equal, with a guitar at 2 to 3 times the cost.
