Body Shape

The K series of Breedlove mandolins have become an instant classic. Through the mind and hands of Kim Breedlove, the traditional Florentine shape has been transformed into a more modern, less rounded version of itself.

Top Wood

Sitka spruce, picea sitchensis, originates in the northwest United States. Sitka spruce has been the primary top wood for American-made instruments for decades. It is strong and light with extended harmonic content, and it nearly equals the power of Adirondack. It offers a strong, focused tone with a solid fundamental -- perfect for flatpicking styles. When compared with European spruce, Sitka delivers warmer, more fundamental sound, largely free of overtones. Sitka takes a slightly longer period of playing time to open up. It has a straight uniform grain and coloration ranges from white to pink to light brown.

Band and Side Wood

Maple is great for standing out among other instruments. With a powerful fundamental and even harmonics, it is clear and present, but without pronounced peaks and valleys in the harmonic content.

I just ordered and received this Breedlove mandolin from zzounds. It was my first purchase from zZounds. I’m always leery of ordering a musical instrument from an Internet company cause I can’t try the instrument before buying it. But thank you zZounds for making this a pleasurable experience. I ordered my mandolin on Thursday evening and it was on my porch early on Saturday morning. This is only the first mandolin I’ve purchased but I’m thrilled with it. It’s beautiful to look at and sounds great. Its a hardwood mandolin for about 400.00. It projects sound so well and the lower tones are amazing. I was playing on the porch and I’m afraid I might annoy my neighbors cause I can’t leave it alone. Love playing this thing and I can’t wait to perform with it. Thank you zZounds and Breedlove. I’m a very happy customer

Sound
I haven’t played that many different mandolins but this one really projects well. My old one was a cheap one and I don’t think you could hear it from 25 yards away but my neighbors may be complaining about this one. It makes itself heard. I have so far only played it at home. Can’t wait to hear it when I play at church.

Features
I prefer a built in tuner and I kind of miss the pickguard as an anchor place for my hand but I have a clip on tuner and I’m adjusting well to not having a pickguard.

Ease of Use
This thing booms out sound. The round sound read more hole is an improvement. I was amazed that a hardwood mandolin at this price would sound this great. The low notes are amazing. Haven’t played it yet with other musicians but I can’t wait to schedule a practice and hear this thing with a microphone. Very easily playable.

Quality
Very well made and beautiful to look at. I can’t believe I own it. Looks like restringing it may be a little tricky. I’ll have to somehow fish them down under the plate at the bottom and loop them around some pins. But maybe not as hard as it looks.

Value
Yes I am amazed to find a hardwood mandolin at this price that sounds so good.

The Wow Factor
I loved the look of it. Not your standard mandolin shape. It’s unique and the round sound hole is an improvement in my opinion. I’m thrilled with it and I can’t quit playing it.
