Randall RH50T Tube Guitar Amplifier Head (50 Watts)

No longer available at zZounds
2 channels. 4 modes. Includes 4-button footswitch.

Introducing the new all-tube line that breaks a barrier for price and performance. Continuing to offer the most flexible features, the new Tube Series incorporates 4 modes of operation in 2 fully-independent channels.

Channel 1 or 'overdrive' channel includes dual gain stages for hi-gain rhythm and lead. Gain 1 is a tight-feeling classic to hi-gain tone with great note definition while Gain 2 is a bit softer with more gain for lead tones with liquid sustain.

Channel 2 or 'clean' channel is a traditional clean tone with sparkly highs and cutting mid-range. The footswitchable boost function adds some grit and volume for a nice semi-distorted country to blues lead tone.

So whether you looking for a great sounding tube amp to jam at home with friends or a flexible high-performance road amp, the new Tube Series has your back.

I was looking for a backup to my Valveking head when we play out, (I don't like taking my XXX out to smoke filled clubs), but I think the Valveking has been demoted to backup. The VK is a great sounding head too, it just has a different type of distortion to it. The VK has harsher distortion which is good and bad.

Sound
I really can't figure out why this didn't catch on like the Peavey VK100 head, which I also own. This amp flat out wails. Really smooth distortion, great for 80's rock/metal. Maybe not over the top distortion, but great amp. Different speakers obviously affect the sound. I have a cab with Eminence GB's in it and it's a great match.

Features
Great pedal, the switchable gain channels are OK. The red channel to me is just ok, and to be honest I haven't played too much with the clean, but don't tell me anyone is buying a Randall to play clean, Randall owners are true metalheads. Footswitchable reverb is nice.

Ease of Use
Unlike a Peavey XXX, which I also have that has active eq's, this is easy to get a consistent good sound. Turn the dials and there it is. Manual sucks.

Quality
Made in China so who knows. Bought mine used, and was DOA, but a few weeks in the shop, and it's the amp I play most now.

Value
At $530, it may be steep for a chinese built 50W amp, bought it sounds killer. If you see one used, read more you should check it out, but for some reason they are really hard to find, Randall must not have mass produced tons of these.

Manufacturer Support
If you can get a tech on the phone, they are fairly helpful, but don't expect replies from an email.

The Wow Factor
It's fairly light weight which is a bonus.
