MXR EVH Phase 90 Eddie Van Halen Phaser

Edward Van Halen earned his spot in the guitar tone hall of fame with the first note on his debut album in 1978. The guitar work on that album still boggles minds more than 25 years later. The tones that EVH got on that classic record are among the greatest ever, and a huge part of Eddie's guitar sound has always been the MXR Phase 90. The Phase 90 contributed to the unbelievable tones on "Eruption," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "On Fire," and "Atomic Punk," plus many other timeless Van Halen tracks.

Now you can grab a piece of Eddie's magic with the MXR EVH 90 -- a collaboration between Eddie Van Halen and Dunlop Manufacturing that represents a totally redesigned, updated version of the legendary Phase 90. The EVH 90 will give you the same great spacey swirls and hypnotic warbles that made the Phase 90 famous. But the EVH 90 also features the Script switch that lets you instantly toggle between a vintage, "Script Logo" phase tone and a more modern, in-your-face "Block Logo" phaser. Plus, the EVH 90 sports the greatest graphics in the history of rock: the Red, White, and Black stripes from Eddie's legendary Frankenstein guitar.

Very good product.

Sound
I'm not much into pedals, but this is a real stunner. Works equally well for lead and rhythm. Warm, luscious and pulsating washes of sound and with interesting pulses of extra overdi=rive/feedback sounds on occasion. Once you have one you will notice all those songs where one has been used too - and you may not have noticed it before. It fattens up rhythms not unlike a chorus pedal and adds interest to lead work. It sounds very good with your amp on full overdrive or when clean. I have to say I never use it with the knob turned more than halfway up and usually only a quarter turn up or less. You get the van Halen sound with a throbbing Marshall or a more typical 70s sound (Skynyrd, Tull, Thin Lizzy) when coupled with more moderate distortion. There is a very subtle difference + and - the script switch but not a great deal to my ears. Perhaps it means you need only get the regular MXR90? I have to say I almost always engage the script for the "vintage" sound, but this is only because I assumed it woudl sound better.

Features
Its got a knob and script switch. The knob turned up past halfway gets into uncontrollable territory - might be effective for weird sounds once in a while - but I've not used it there yet. The blue diode is so bright it positively dazzles. I guess that's good should thelights go out and you need to see...
