Epiphone Inspired by 1964 Texan Acoustic-Electric Guitar

No longer available at zZounds
No ordinary dreadnought, the Epiphone Texan is the acoustic guitar of choice for some of the world's top songwriters -- including Paul McCartney, circa 1964.

The Epiphone Texan was introduced in 1958, and since then has earned the acclaim of numerous legendary musicians and songwriters. This dreadnought-style acoustic-electric is most closely associated with Paul McCartney, who used his 1964 Texan to write and record "Yesterday" -- a song that has been covered more than any other song in popular music history! With the addition of a few modern improvements that make this guitar even friendlier to the modern-day player, who knows what songs you'll write on your own Epiphone Texan!

A Meatier Dreadnought Design

As you can see, the Epiphone Texan looks like a more or less typical dreadnought acoustic, but it actually has a decidedly more rounded upper bout and larger lower bout with a shallower waist. This "advanced jumbo" body shape imparts the guitar with its tonal character: a bright, snappy response balanced by a solid low end.

Premium Tonewoods Throughout

This "Inspired By 1964" release of the Epiphone Texan has a solid spruce top with a solid mahogany back sides. The result is a guitar that sounds great right out of the box -- but is guaranteed to mature and richen with age if properly humidified and taken care of. The neck is made from a single piece of solid mahogany and set with a pau ferro fingerboard. You'll feel the solidity of the hand-fitted and glued neck-body joint, while the Epiphone '60s SlimTaper neck is sure to reinforce the speed and finesse of your playing. The parallelogram position marker inlays read more reproduce the aesthetic of the original vintage models.

Shadow Sonic Preamp and Pickup System

One of the finest additions to the Epiphone Texan for the more modern-day player is its state-of-the-art Shadow Sonic preamp system. This clever design uses an under-saddle NanoFlex low-impedance pickup to faithfully reproduce the sound of your playing. This essentially means that the system senses both the vibrations of the strings and the movements of the soundboard simultaneously, giving you the most true-to-life sonic image possible. The system itself is invisibly mounted inside the soundhole. The preamp features an easy-to-access volume control with a 2-band EQ control to help get your sound right for the space and amplifier you're using. A Phase switch is also provided to help kill feedback when it arises.

The preamp is powered with a battery pack that comes with an LED indicator to tell you when you're 30 minutes away from running out of juice. You'll need just 2 x 2032 lithium batteries to power this exceptionally lightweight and unobtrusive preamp. The high-quality Shadow output jack is incorporated into the endpin jack.

Improved Hardware

Up top are 14:1 ratio vintage tuners that look just like the originals but are stronger and hold their tuning better. The saddle has been updated to a fixed, compensated design that provides much more balanced intonation and tuning stability.

Epiphone Inspired by 1964 Texan Acoustic

Since it's introduction in 1958, the Epiphone Texan has been the choice of countless musicians including Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton and Noel Gallagher. In fact, McCartney wrote and performed one of the most recorded and popular songs ever, "Yesterday" on his 1964 Texan. Now, Epiphone brings back the Texan combining all the great features of the original with modern updates for today's musician.

Advanced Jumbo Shape

Unlike ordinary dreadnoughts, the Texan features a more rounded upper bout and a larger lower bout with a subtle waist. Resembling a bell shape, this leads to a more balanced tone with shimmering highs, deeper lows and clearer mid-range that's perfect for singer/songwriters and other solo performers. Like the original, the Texan features a premium solid Spruce top with a solid Mahogany back and Mahogany rims. Solid woods resonate beautifully and only improve with age. The neck is solid Mahogany topped with a pau ferro fingerboard adorned with the original parallelogram inlays. Hand-fitted and glued into the body, the neck features Epiphone's SlimTaper(tm) neck profile that's comfortable and easy to play. Keeping the guitar in tune are original-style but updated 14:1 ratio vintage tuners with classic small oval buttons. Epiphone has even reproduced the original blue rectangular sound hole label from the 1960's for yet another touch of authenticity.

Features

First, the saddle has been updated to feature a fixed, compensated saddle. Unlike the original adjustable style, this saddle provides improved tuning accuracy and better string vibration transfer to the top resulting in improved tone and sustain. And for today's player, Epiphone adds Shadow's state-of-the-art Sonic(tm) preamp system with the revolutionary under-saddle NanoFlex(tm) low-impedance pickup to allow acoustic players to "plug in." Discretely mounted inside the sound hole, the Sonic preamp features an easy-access volume control with high and low EQ controls.

There's also a "phase" switch that instantly cuts feedback without affecting tone. The Nanoflex pickup is the only pickup that senses both the vibrations of the strings and the movements of the soundboard simultaneously. The sound is truly "acoustic" combining accurate body and string tone with percussive attack. It's like having a microphone mixed with an under saddle pickup! Due to active amplification directly at the pickup and 100% shielding of the entire system, there is no signal loss and no "hum" created.

A battery indicator LED turns on when the battery is low and should be replaced within 30 minutes. Powered by two 2032 lithium batteries, the complete system is extremely light and weighs far less than ordinary 9V systems. A premium Shadow output jack is incorporated into the endpin jack and the entire electronic system is covered by Shadow's 5-year worldwide parts and labor limited warranty.

Years of Enjoyment.

Combined with Epiphone's Limited Lifetime Warranty and Gibson's 24/7/365 Customer Service, the Inspired by 1964 Texan acoustic/electric reproduces a vintage classic while providing years of worry-free enjoyment. Take one home today and fall in love with the Texan - again.

Epiphone has always been my go to preference when it comes to acoustic guitars. I ordered this guitar at 2pm yesterday and it arrived this morning at 10am! After a thorough inspection and setup, it is easy to see that this guitar is an incredible value. Fit and finish were flawless, not a spec of glue around the neck or around the beefy bracing inside the soundhole. This guitar has a crisp, woody tone to it with great bass response (i.e. Felice Brothers, Gregory Alan Isakov). The tuners are actually surprisingly precise. The antique natural finish is beautiful! I have yet to plug in, so I can't speak for the electronics. If you are on the fence about purchasing this guitar I can honestly tell you that it does not disappoint. Zzounds price matched this guitar for me, and i took advantage of the 4 Easy Pay Plan. Thanks to Zzounds for the A+ service and for a product that will bring me joy for many years to come!
