"I own one and just love the intuitness of the buttons and menu's."
I think it is the most intuitive brand of all-in-one multitrackers out there. I find the entire VS line both easy to use and very powerful. Within 20 minutes I was able to get into menu's and buttons and learned quickly how to tweak and master the tracks that were recorded. i was even able to tweak the EQ, pan and track levels and effects right away and then save the master audio mix settings. All without even cracking open the manual.
Of course most deeper functions and features must be learned through reading the manual. The VS1824CD is logically laid out and the menu system is very intuitive. And one of the most powerful of the multitrackers out there. Although there are new VS models out now for awhile, this one is a bit more portable than their big brother models. I would suggest learning on this or even the VS1680 and 1880 models too. Which are almost identical.
The only drawback this era of the Roland VS line is no USB connector or wave format transfers to a computer, however you can transfer VS files through Reaper DAW software and have Reaper convert them into wave files. And or use a SCSI drive on a computer to transfer the audio tracks into a computer.
But if yoou want to maintane the VS master stereo mix and VS effects sound, just send it through the VS stereo digital output to a DAT or computer DAW. Or send the individual tracks with effects or not through the analog outputs, analog outs sound good enough.
To me the sound quality is very good, the only thing people complain about are the XLR mic preamps levels supposively being weak, but they really are not, I have personally heard good dynamic vocals recorded on this and without noise.
With most other brands of multitirackers, I find them confusing and unusable until you spend hours with their manual and even still the function menu's and buttons are still clunky and awkward in their setup and use. Although the Fostex VF line is almost as easy to use as the Roland VS line here. The Korg line seems to be the most confusing to me.
The Roland VS1824CD is very capable of producing commercial CD quality albums in this all-in-one easy to use but very powerful multitrack recorder and CD burner.

"Great recorder, but there's a learning curve"
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
A remarkably versatile machine with pristine audio quality. What you put in is exactly what you get back out of it. Onboard effects range from decent to excellent, and there's good connectivity, though I would have preferred all channels have both XLR & 1/4" inputs. If you think you're going to buy one of these and start banging out great sounding projects the first time out of the chute, you're mistaken. All of the versatility in a small package comes at a price, and that is user-friendliness. There are 3 manuals that come with this unit for good reason. There's a learning curve for sure, but once you master it, this unit is a true recording studio in a box, and with the right know-how is capable of turning out projects you'd think were recorded in a high-dollar professional studio. You just need to be willing to spend some time learning how to use it.

Semi professional musician since the 1980s

"The Grass is Greener"
This is very nice but an upgrade will be made in the next year or two for sure. But it will still be a Roland brand.
Sound
The sound is nice and true to an extent but the distorted guitars are practically paper waiting to be blown away. There is no real captureing of these type instruments, I have use several top line studio mics and still I'm have found anything attractive.
Features
The effects are nice and easy to use but they don't go as far as you need them to, an external effect board is totally a must.
Quality
It is very reliable to get certain sounds but you will have problems on some application so be ready for anything.
Value
This thing will be dirt cheap in about 2 years, just watch.
Manufacturer Support
I'm stilling trying to reach them- all I rec'd was the mixer, no comp. programs or drum programs, not even a manual. Appreciate that one.
Musical Style:
An undescribable sounf that would reflect Pink Floyd in the year 2020

"sick crushing death/grind sound!"
this will last me a couple years till we make off enough off our cd sells to upgarde to a higher roland model. why waste money @ a studio crunched for time when you can by this and have time on your side.
Sound
the quality of the audio recordings are exceptional. i use a shure 57 for guitars and an imitation shure drum mic pack that really sounds like the real mics. after mixing and mastering, it sounds like any commericially available cd not a demo. guitars have the crunch, bass has the depth, drums have the tone, vocals like all other intruments sound natural. nothing distorting the speakers.
Features
nice features like the effect bays, input & track mixers, 2 balanced and 8 unbalanced input jacks, easy routing, automix, autopunch in/out, just an all in one unit with too much ish. Record, mix, master, burn the mastr to cd-r, send of for duplicatoion, and mass distribute your product.
Quality
quality compacted package. still intact and like new though it has taken some abuse from my rigorous recording sessions.
Value
your getting more than what you pay for.
Manufacturer Support
have not needed them yet. the manuels have it all.
The Wow Factor
compact all in one studio
Musical Style:
death - grind
