PreSonus DigiMax 96k Customer Review

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
Sound
I am amazed how great the preamps are in this box. And the limiters are definitely worth the extra money. Great value and sounds freaking killer too!
Features
I loved the EQ button on each channel. Definitely gives you another option tonally when you are tracking.
Quality
Big and beefy feeling. Definitely smokes the Focusrite Octopre which feels a lot lighter plus its made in China whereas the Digimax is made in the USA.
Value
It's the best eight channel preamp I've heard for the money.
Manufacturer Support
Had to leave a message but they called me back promptly. I wish more companies were like this one.

"Borrowed for a session, was let down"

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I used this product for a 3 day session, and once I sorted out the ADAT issue it worked really well, but because of the ADAT problem I really had to re-evaluate how much I needed or wanted this product. Since I had to trick it to run at 48khz anyways, I would probably rather get the digimax LT, assuming it's preamps are just as good. But, more likely I'll just save up for the focusrite ISA 424, which is 4 channels that use the 96khz split bit adat standard.
Sound
The preamps sounded really good, I used this on a session for some toms and they sounded huge. Very clean, no complaints at all about the quality of the sound.
Features
I was SORELY dissapointed that the ADAT out is disabled when running at 96khz. Someone else complained in the review of this product that it ONLY did 4 channels at 96k over lightpipe, but this is incorrect. It doesn't do it at all, instead you have to use the AES/EBU outputs. A call to presonus confirmed this. I had assumed that this product would have two lightpipe connectors, or at least one that did 4 channels. Unfortunately the manual on the presonus website is for the old, discontinued digimax, as was the manual that was included with the piece. This type of product was created to accompany the DIGI 001, motu 828 and simmilar products that have ADAT lightpipe inputs. It doesn't make any sense for presonus to not support lightpipe when running at 96khz, which is supposed to be the biggest, most important feature of the digimax *96*.
Quality
Everything except the ADAT connector rocked
Value
The limiters, the preamps, and even the enhance features on this unit work very well. If you were running at 48khz, or had 4 stereo aes/ebu inputs, this would be an excellent piece for the money.
Manufacturer Support
When I finally called presonus, they were very quick to let me know that their product didn't do what I thought it did. Their pre-purchase support could use a lot of improvement though, such as an online manual that actually covered their specific product rather than it's predecessor, or at least a full explanation of the 96khz features on their website.
The Wow Factor
I'm much less enthusiastic about this product than I was before getting to use it. The entire purpose of getting the 96khz version of the digimax was to run at 96khz.

"Great preamp, except for the digital outs!"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Very well designed; the preamp itself is nice and compact.
Sound
Good sound. The actual front end to the preamp is a TI INA163, which is top-notch. Unfortunately, noise performance is disappointing compared to the Focusrite octopre.
Features
The digital output is poorly designed. You can only get four channels onto the lightpipe-out at 96 kHz! The Focusrite is better at this. The pad feature is great and VERY well implemented in circuitry. The "enhance" feature is downright silly- the whole point of multitracking is that you don't HAVE to use EQ or (much) dymanics while recording.
Quality
Well made. Presonus is great about repair and providing parts when necessary.
Value
Good value.
Manufacturer Support
Absolutely fantastic customer support.
