"Externally clockable CD-transport"

Overall: 3 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I'm upgrading to a Universal disk player, and I've had this for a year. What I want is the ability to play DVD-A and SACD + a non-cable remote. Obviously it's unfair to compare. I will probably keep it anyway - it does record and I can put a lot of my analog tapes to digital disk/hard-drive memory through the A/D. The greatest feature for me with this player is that it is externally clockable.
Sound
I use the Tascam as a CD-transport in a high-end home stereo. The reason I bought it is the ability to clock it externally - so that it's in sync with my DAC (I use a Lucid Clkx6 distribution amp to extract the clock and send it to the Tascam) . You can tell if the sync is off, indicating that the internal clock is less than ideal. Have also compared it with Sony's CDRW-66 which seems to have a better internal clock, a bloomier soundstage and less precision and punch in the bass.
Features
Had it had a wireless remote I would have given it 10. That said you get a lot for the money A/D, recording, external clocking to name a few.
Quality
The remote has been playing up off-and-on and I haven't had time to address it - and now the warranty is up... The player sometimes makes funny noises - electronic noise and has a slight hum
Value
I paid less - it's an ex-demo.
Manufacturer Support
Can't say really - have to see if they're willing to assist with my remote despite warranty having expired.
