Zoom iQ7 Compact iOS Lightning Mid-Side Condenser Microphone

zZounds Gear Experts Say...
Capture better sound on your iPhone/iPad videos! This mid-side stereo microphone plugs into the Lightning port, turning your iOS device into a Zoom recorder.

When you're ready to take your iOS audio to the next level, plug in a Zoom iQ7. This compact yet full-featured mid-side stereo condenser mic is perfect for capturing music as well as video with outstanding audio. With the iQ7, you can create great-sounding recordings on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch any time, any place.

Mid-Side Recording:

Mid-side is an advanced recording technique that allows the width of the stereo image to be varied, even in post-production. The two microphone elements in the iQ7 include a directional "mid" mic that captures signal coming from directly in front of your iOS device, and a bidirectional "side" mic that captures the audio coming from both sides.

A three-way switch allows you to select between 90* (to focus on sounds coming from the center) and 120* (for a wider image that includes ambience and room signal). A third setting, labeled "M-S," enables you record the audio "raw" and adjust its stereo width afterwards, using Zoom's free downloadable Handy Recorder iOS app.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's free Handy Recorder app, available from the iTunes App Store, adds a wealth of audio tools to your iOS device. Overdub to the stereo recordings created with your iQ7. Perform fine editing functions in its waveform display. Save your files in either linear PCM or AAC file formats. Apply onboard effects such as compression, EQ, and reverb to further enhance the sound. Handy Recorder even allows you to email the audio you create and read more to upload it to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

Amplify Your Creativity

The iQ7 is compatible with most iOS apps that support input from an external microphone, including Apple's Voice Memo and Garageband, as well as other popular music recording, voice recognition, and streaming apps. Apps that provide support for multiple sampling rates--such as Handy Recorder--work great too, allowing you to choose between 44.1 and 48 kHz recording for optimum audio quality.

I have to say that the mic is an improvement over the the internal mics that come with the iproducts. The headphones jack works good. The Gain dial works fine and is quite when turning live. However, There are issues I have with the mic. The mic has no RFI protection built in meaning you can’t use this mic for Facebook live or other WiFi Or Bluetooth necessary applications. The mic clicks and pops while recording if you leave your WiFi and Bluetooth on during recording. You must turn off both in order for the mic to work up to spec. Also there is no port for charging the iproduct while the mic is in use. That is frustrating and limits the time you can record down to how long your battery will last. For me these are epic failures in design and limits the mic to only a few uses. Because the mic can only be used for limited purpose recordings I find the price too high. It works fine with Lexas Audio Editor and Voice Memo as a stand alone sound recording tool. The only times I use the iQ7 is when I’m in a meeting, need a recording of my bands with video, and EVP detection/searching. If you want use this mic for stand alone non~WiFi/ Bluetooth work then it sounds good and gets the job done.

Sound
It’s records nicely, and sounds transparent.

Features
The mic has useful features. The capsule head turns and rotates for decent pointing. The gain dial is quite. The stereo switch works fine. The input LED is accurate.Pitfalls read more ~ no RFI protection, no charging port.

Ease of Use
It’s very easy to get a good recording out of this mic.

Quality
For a little plastic mic it seems to built well. I’ve dropped it several times on a hardwood floor and it keeps working so it is a durable mic.

Value
The mic is over priced by my point of Veiw because you cant use it with WiFi/Bluetooth necessary apps.

Manufacturer Support
No, I haven’t had to deal wit Zoom.

The Wow Factor
It’s a good mic. There’s limited options for iproduct specific mics so it fills a gap.
