The Taylor T5X -- or T5 Classic -- is a definitive best-of-both-worlds instrument. Combining prized Taylor acoustic construction and with an innovative three-pickup electronic system, the T5X offers an extremely open-ended set of tones to explore. A comfortable thinline body, ovangkol soundboard, and ebony fretboard give the T5X stunning looks and superb natural sound. Excellently suited for jazz, folk, blues, rock, country and more, the T5 Classic is a stellar choice for guitarists who want it all.

Versatile Three-Pickup Electronic System

Like the rest of the Taylor T5 series, the T5 Classic reaps its vast tonal variety from a flexible three-pickup configuration. A T5 body sensor pickup (similar to the Expression System body pickup found on Taylor acoustics) lies beneath the soundboard in the lower bout of the body, and does an outstanding job capturing the organic acoustic tones of the wood. Above the bridge, a single stacked humbucker yields more electric-like timbres for everything from '50s country twang, to explosive modern rock sounds. Rounding out the pickup set is a second stacked humbucker hidden at the neck joint which delivers an excellent cross-section of warm jazz and rootsy blues-like flavors. Taylor has outfitted this guitar with an onboard EQ and a five-way pickup selector to help you explore a massive palette of tones from traditional Taylor acoustic textures to all-out solidbody sizzle. Isolate the body sensor pickup and strum with the full-bodied tones read more of a Taylor acoustic-electric, or try the bridge pickup alone for more rock-like tones. The T5 even offers a choice of running the two forward pickups series or parallel for an even broader selection of electric styles.

Tonewoods and Body Design

The Taylor T5X features sapele back and sides with a gorgeous ovangkol top. A close relative of rosewood, ovangkol yields similar depth and complexity in its sound, which adds much to the T5X's broad tonal range. Like all Taylors, this guitar includes a genuine ebony fingerboard, which -- combined with the comfortable thinline body style -- makes the T5X an absolute delight to play. A pair of stylish soundholes not only look fantastic, but also add to the guitar's resonance by allowing the cavity to breathe more openly.

Taylor T5X Classic Acoustic-Electric

An African relative of rosewood, Ovangkol lends rosewood-inspired sonic properties to the Taylor T5 Classic (T5-X). The result is a full acoustic midrange with bright trebles that are accentuated by the T5's fully-hollow design. Then switch to the T5's electric side and discover just how versatile a guitar can be.

When I first received the Taylor I was less than impressed by the acoustic sound. I came very close to returning it but lo and behold it just took getting used to to get an awesome sound. I recommend an ABY switching box (I use the Tonebone Twin City) and a good acoustic preamp (BBE Acoustimax). You really need to be able to tweak the mids for a good acoustic tone. I also replaced the standard Elixir electric strings with DR Zebra Medium acoustic electric strings and wow, what a difference. I also needed to spring for a $125 professional setup to get the neck adjusted but guitar plays perfect now. Add in the SKB 35 Semi Hollow hard case which fits the T5 like a glove and you are in business. Was not really comfortable hauling around a $1500 guitar in a soft case, although the Taylor soft case is nice.
