Pleasantly surprised with the tones right out of the gate. With my Bogner on crunch, it growls in that desirable vintage way. Pull the volume down, and it cleans right up. Both pickups sound really good; they will stay in the guitar. In prior SEs I've always replaced the pickups, but not in this 594 standard. Clean tones are solid, playing with high gain; she sounds rich and deep. I'm blown away; all the reviews I've read are true - the SE 9594 is an exceptional guitar, definitely a top pick under $1,000.
