Overview
The PRS SE Custom 24 Sem-Hollow Piezo is a highly sophisticated and incredibly versatile instrument. A solidbody guitar with a maple top, mahogany back, dual numbers, and the patented PRS tremolo, the Custom 24 is the original PRS design first introduced in 1985. This semi-hollow version adds natural resonance and a vibrant, organic tone.
The humbuckers in this model are PRS 85/15 "S" pickups, which can be tapped via the push/pull tone control for more sounds. The addition of the LR Baggs/PRS Piezo system furthers the instrument's versatility by offering electric and acoustic tones in one guitar. The PRS SE Custom 24 Semi-Hollow Piezo is designed with two discrete volume controls (magnetics and piezo) and output jacks (mix/piezo and magnetics). Players can plug into the "Mix/Piezo" jack and use the individual volume controls to blend the 85/15 "S" pickups with the piezo's acoustic tones.
Alternatively, players can plug into the jacks separately, so the guitar can run magnetic pickups into an amp and run the piezo through an acoustic amp or DI into the soundboard. When using the magnetic output jack in isolation, the piezo battery is bypassed completely, acting as a failsafe (in this scenario, the magnetic pickups still work even if the piezo battery has run out of juice).
Additional details include a matching headstock veneer, headstock and fretboard binding, and lampshade knobs. With nearly infinite tones and roadworthy reliability, the PRS SE Custom 24 Semi-Hollow Piezo… read more is a modern classic that looks and feels as good as it sounds.

...with one tiny flaw, which I'll get to in a moment. Gorgeous guitar (I got the vintage sunburst, I just like that look) and it presents and plays like a dream. The real selling point, to me, is the piezo system. I own a Schecter C1 E/A and a Michael Kelly Hybrid Special, both of which also have piezo to pair/alternate with mag pickups, and this PRS, out of the three, wins the tone test hands down. Not sure if it's just the fact that the Schecter and the MK use Fishman piezo systems while the PRS is an LR Baggs/PRS collaboration- all I know is that the PRS has the best and most authentic acoustic sound, without that annoying plastic hiss you can sometimes get with piezo, even on an actual acoustic A/E. And mixing in the mag pups really backs up the goods- I tend to have the mag set on about 5-6 with the piezo all the way up when I'm using the mix. The PRS does lack the mini-toggle for A/B/Y-ing the piezo and the mag pups that the other two guitars have, but there are easy work-arounds for that. And the 85/15 "S" pickups sound great on their own, of course- with the added resonance of the guitar's semi-hollow construction, there's really no limit to what you can coax tone-wise out of them. The only hair in the ointment is the battery-compartment setup. The guitar I got today is actually the second- I had to get a replacement because, on the first one, the battery holder which is supposed to drop out for access got hung up (maybe a lead wrapped around something inside the guitar),…

and in trying to work it out to where I could get to the battery, the negative lead broke off at the solder joint. zZounds, of course, with their top-notch service, immediately stood me good for the replacement with no problem and at no cost to me. (Really cannot say enough good things about the folks at zZounds- they are number one!) I checked at the PRS forums, and sure enough- a couple of guys there had the same problem. The consensus seemed to be that PRS really needs to rethink that battery holder setup- even if the leads don't hang up as mine did, the thing does just kind of dangle there, a break waiting to happen if you're not really super-super-delicate with handling it. Maybe PRS could do something along the lines of what Schecter does with their battery-holder system- no moving parts except the battery itself. So, yeah- be aware of that. But that's minor to me, compared to the overall "this guitar is fantastic!" experience. I only deducted a half-point in "ease of use" for it- everything else is a solid 5. (Well, I haven't had to deal with PRS Manufacturer Support, so I just leave that at a 5 in the absence of any reason to think otherwise)
