Neumann KH 120 II Powered Full-Range Studio Monitor

Neumann's venerable KH 120 nearfield monitor is back for round II and better than ever -- with deeper bass, more power, and built-in DSP for room alignment.

The KH 120 is more than just part of the KH line-up. It's Neumann's first born, which kickstarted their monitor portfolio. The reactions from the press and professionals were overwhelmingly enthusiastic. The KH 120 quickly became the reference in high-end nearfield monitoring.

So, what could they possibly add to a perfect monitor that gets five-star ratings all over the world? Their colleagues in the labs looked back at years of R&D progress and introduced the KH 120 II with dozens of sophisticated improvements. "It is part of the Neumann philosophy to never be satisfied with what has been developed so far," said Portfolio Manager Stephan Mauer, "That is why Neumann continue to develop, optimize, and make things even more perfect." One major improvement is DSP driven electronics, which allows for phase linear crossovers and Automatic Monitor Alignment via Neumann's revolutionary MA 1.

All acoustic parameters have been improved as well. This version comes with even less distortion, deeper bass, higher max. SPL and an even better resolution. The redesigned cabinet is now made from MDF, which is a more sustainable material with even better rigidity than the aluminum used previously. The woofer features a complete redesign. The Mathematically Modeled Dispersion (MMD(TM)) waveguide was adopted to the cabinet design. And there are dozens of additional improvements, not to mention the patent-pending amplifier technology that allows for superior audio performance with the energy efficiency read more of Class D.

The KH 120 II is a powerful update to an application that has seen strong growth over the last years: Nearfield monitoring is key not only for broadcast, OB vans, and project or recording studios, but also in streaming events and live recordings where audio experts need to get the best out of ever-changing work environments. The KH 120 II is a worthy successor to the venerable KH 120 A. Combined with the potential of MA 1, the KH 120 II is ready to guard perfection for the next generation.

Features:

- High-precision drivers, Mathematically Modeled Dispersion(TM) (MMD(TM)) waveguide
- Linear frequency response 44 Hz ... 21 kHz (+/-3 dB)
- Linear phase response 120 Hz ... 16 kHz (+/-45*) with latency - DSP inside allows for room adaptive alignment via Neumann's MA 1
- Razor sharp imaging due to extremely low tolerances (+/-0.5 dB)
- May be combined with other KH line speakers in immersive or surround setups

"Doesn't Work with MA-1 Software"

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
The KH 120 II is built like a tank and basically improves upon the first one in every way, except for the fact that it currently doesn't work with the MA-1 software. Excellent sounding monitors and if you have room correction software already, they're a great choice. Otherwise, don't buy this if you need the room correction software. I'll revisit this review if Neumann corrects the issues with the software.
