Eight Strings -- Nearly Infinite Tonal Options!
In the yet-to-be-explored world of eight-string axes, Tosin Abasi has struck a impressionable chord with his Ibanez TAM10 Signature guitar -- most notably in his progressive metal band Animals as Leaders. Key to Abasi's inimitable style is this 8-string signature axe loaded with three DiMarzio Ionizer8 pickups -- in HSH configuration -- that together fuse a thick metal tone perfect for complex technical leads and rich atypically-tuned chord structures. A coil-tap switch and five-way pickup selector switch give you up to eight different pickup combinations. The TAM10's basswood body and TAM five-piece maple/walnut neck work together for awesomely biting resonance and ultimate playability.
The Unexplored Terrain of Eight-string Axes
By the virtue of playing an eight-string guitar, you're already going to be standing out. There is a lot of room for exploration with an extra pair of strings, and the TAM10 is a fantastic guitar to experiment with. Your axe comes with a factory tuning of E, B, G, D, A, E, B, E, but you can try A, E, A, D, G, B, E, A -- using a really small gauge string for that high A -- if you want to get a "drop A" bar-chord feel on your bottom three strings. Another option is D#, A#, F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, F. The door is wide open for more tuning options.
The Thick Tone of DiMarzio Humbucker and Single-coil Pickups
Having a single-coil pickup sandwiched between two humbuckers gives you a lot of room for tonal exploration on your Ibanez TAM10. This HSH configuration with DiMarzio Ionizer8s means your neck and bridge pickups are full, fat, and punchy. Your middle single-coil has more of a bite to it. Switch around and see how many different sounds you can get out of this triplet of monster tone.
Coil-tapping Switch for Eight Different Pickup Settings
The TAM10's DiMarzio HSH configuration also comes with a coil-tapping switch to give you single-coil pickup settings to play with. Used with your five-way pickup selector blade you have a total of eight possible configurations.
With your coil-tapping switch turned off, you have neck (humbucker), neck (single-coil closer to neck) and middle, neck (humbucker) and bridge (humbucker), middle and bridge (single-coil closer to middle), and bridge (humbucker). With your coil-tapping switch on, you get three additional settings -- neck (single-coil closer to middle), neck (single-coil closer to middle) and bridge (single-coil closer to middle), and bridge (single-coil closer to middle).
Basswood Body and Five-piece Maple/walnut Neck
The TAM10's basswood body resonates mid and higher frequencies, giving your tone a brighter color to it -- great for solos and hooks. Your five-piece maple/walnut neck harnesses insane action for speedy leads and sustains your notes continuously. Your TAM10 axe has a longer scale of 27" to keep all of your strings tighter and slightly brighter in tone.
