Overview
Looking for new musical expanses to explore. The recognized "First in Seven, Leader in Eight" has thrown down the proverbial gauntlet. After having brought a high performance 8-string into the range of affordability for every player who heard the siren call of that instrument's musical mysteries, here comes a the Ibanez RG9 a 9-string RG that promises performance and accessibility no less awesome.
With a Black-as-midnight finish cloaking its Basswood body, a 28" neck opens up a plethora of down tuning possibilities. Its Rosewood fingerboard with classic pearl dot inlays complete the visuals, and the jumbo frets grant license for all the string-bending you can bring. As the originators of the thin, fast neck, the Ultra-9 is yet another achievement for the Ibanez designers in terms of player comfort. Not has Ibanez managed to make the RG9 quite playable, its neck-feel is immediately inspiring. The proprietary QM-9 humbuckers are designed to thrive in the down tuned netherworld and yield a whole palette of thick, distorted tone textures.

Accustomed to my Dean 8 String, I was ready to add one more, although I was skeptical over how much control I would have on the C# string, as well as clarity of sound.
The action was perfect out of the box, and right away I was using the full scale and breadth of the neck with ease. If you are used to a 6 string, this neck might be a big jump for you, both physically and mentally. But if you are coming from a 7 or 8 string, I think it will feel quite comfortable and natural.
The sound is fantastic. I got clear tone and clarity on the 9th string running through a Peavey ReValver 4 virtual amp (Herr Demon?) with very low gain; it even sounded good through my Orange Rockerver 100 amp and cabinet - not my usually choice for low-end metal.
The intonation was spot on out of the box.The guitar is surprisingly lightweight, and even feels a bit small. Can't wait to rock out live with this one!
Manufacturer Support
The guitar manual seems to be a one-size-fits-all... not exactly easy to use when I have to find out what parts my particular model does or does not use.
