Slender-Necked Beauty

The neck on the lefty Gibson SG Standard adopts the slim-profile design that emerged in the later 1960s. This makes the neck notably slimmer than the rounded shape found on the 50s-era instruments. Staying true to the original 1961 SG design, nine trapezoidal inlays accent the bound rosewood fretboard. The headstock is finished to match the body. A mother-of-pearl Gibson logo inlaid at the center of the headstock stamps this instrument with a pedigree of peerless quality. The SG Standard's small black pickguard is a throwback to vintage SGs.

Solid Design for Tight Tone

The 24.75-inch-scale mahogany neck is glued in a deep-set, long-tenon neck/body joint with a 17-degree back-angled headstock. The body and neck are balanced to achieve perfect cross-transference of resonance where they meet at the 19th fret, read more sealed with Franklin Titebond 50 glue -- one of the strongest industrial wood glues in the world. A 1-11/16" wide Corian nut completes the equation. This solid neck-to-body jointing and precise alignment is something that you can distinctly feel as you play the 2013 SG Standard. "SG" stands for Solid Guitar, and its responsive action that you feel in your hands is why this instrument has a reputation for such playability -- musicians don't love it just for those cool little bat wings on top.

Classic Electronics With Subtle Updates

The left-handed Gibson SG Standard comes loaded with a pair of alnico-loaded '57 Classic humbuckers. These are actually updated versions of Gibson's famous PAF humbucker of the late 1950s. With the three-way toggle switch and Tone and Volume knobs on each pickup, you can dial up everything from cool, clean blues tones to thrashing power chords.
