I own a 1961 Jazzmaster, a Vintera II, and about seven others, so I know these guitars well. The Vintera III gets a lot right — matching painted headstock with the period correct transition logo, Gavitt cloth wiring harness, full Switchcraft hardware, CTS pots, a well-cut bone nut, and a tremolo that rivals an American Vintage unit once properly set up. The stock pickups sound good too, better than the Pure Vintage '65s in my opinion, though that's subjective. For a Mexican-made Fender, this is an impressive spec sheet. That said, mine arrived with the bridge fully decked, a loose collet that required removing the entire tremolo to reseat, a bone-dry fretboard, frets that needed crowning and dressing, and cavity shielding that simply does not work. For a $1,400 guitar that ships in a gig bag rather than a hardshell case, that's a tough pill to swallow. zZounds, however, were outstanding. They offered a full refund or exchange without hesitation. I kept the guitar because once I put a proper setup on it, it plays great — 8 out of 10. Out of the box, it's a 6.5. That gap is on Fender, not zZounds. If you're buying online, buy here. Fast shipping, easy financing, and customer service that actually takes care of you.

Sound
The stock mid-'60s spec pickups sound very good — better than the Pure Vintage '65 Jazzmaster pickups in my opinion. They respond well dynamically and have that characteristic Jazzmaster warmth and jangle. Pickup tone is subjective, read more but for a Mexican made Fender these are impressive. I'll eventually cycle through my collection of Curtis Novak pickups to find the best fit for this guitar, but there is no urgency.

Features
Most useful: Gavitt 22AWG pushback cloth wiring harness, full Switchcraft toggle, RTC switch and jack, CTS pots, well cut bone nut, and a tremolo that rivals an American Vintage unit once properly set up. Least useful: the cavity shielding, which is present but not functional and needs to be completely redone.

Ease of Use
Once properly set up, it is extremely playable — 9.5 out of 10. However, it required significant work out of the box, including fret crowning, fret end dressing, a shim, truss rod adjustment, and a collet reseated with Loctite. The Jazzmaster platform has a learning curve for those unfamiliar with the setup, but for experienced players, this guitar is a joy once sorted.

Quality
The finish is beautiful, and the overall construction feels solid and well put together. The guitar is notably light at around 7 pounds. That said, the out-of-the-box quality control was disappointing — bridge decked, loose collet, dry fretboard, frets needing attention, and non-functional shielding. A thimble also fell out when I flipped the guitar over, which is not something you expect on a new guitar at this price point. The bones are great, but Fender needs to tighten up their QC before these leave the factory.

Value
As a mod platform, yes — the spec upgrades over the Vintera II and the overall quality of the bones make this genuinely good value. As a plug-and-play experience straight out of the box at $1,400, it's harder to justify without factoring in a setup bill. It also ships in a gig bag rather than a hardshell case, which other manufacturers include at similar price points.

Manufacturer Support
I contacted Fender directly, and while they have always been solid in my experience, they referred me back to zZounds in this instance. zZounds, on the other hand, were outstanding — they offered a full refund or exchange without hesitation. I kept the guitar because I like the way it plays once set up, but the fact that zZounds handled it so smoothly speaks volumes about them as a retailer.

The Wow Factor
The matching Sonic Blue headstock with the period correct transition logo, the italicized floating in the headstock text, the overall aesthetic — this guitar scratches a very specific itch that I have been chasing for a long time. It is as close as I have gotten to the Sonic Blue Jazzmaster featured on the cover of the Fender 75 Years book without spending vintage money. That alone makes it hard to walk away from. Overall, I would give this a 6.5 out of the box experience, and once set up properly, I would give it a solid 8. I knocked off two points due to the dry fretboard and the vintage-style bridge. The last one is just personal preference.
