Electro-Harmonix MIG-50 Guitar Amplifier Head

Dripping with genuine saturated tube tone, the MIG-50 features two independent normal and high-gain channels. A pair of Tung-Sol 5881 tubes power this beast.

The Sovtek MIG-50 had a well-earned reputation for delivering rich tone and sweet harmonics reminiscent of a tweed Fender Bassman. The Electro-Harmonix MIG-50 head is a faithful reissue of the original with modern enhancements specifically selected to make it bulletproof. Now combined by hand in EHX's NYC factory from the highest quality, globally sourced components, the build quality is first rate.

The MIG-50's classic design features two channels, each with independent volumes. Input I is the normal channel, input II is bright/high gain. A vintage-style tonestack provides a single set of treble, middle, bass and presence controls. Plug right into the MIG-50 -- it comes alive when cranked -- or add an overdrive and other stompboxes because this amp really loves pedals.

If you were a fan of the Sovtek MIG-50 sound from back in the day, than this amp is for you! Its a very faithful clone of the original MIG-50 and sounds great. Very simple to use with only a single EQ and master volume for each channel. Set the volume low and get a nice clean tone, and a great base for pedals......crank it and you be in harmonically saturated overdriven heaven!Pro tip: Plug your guitar into both input 1 and 2 at the same time and blend the bright and normal tones to taste with the volume (this is how the "Sovtek Plexi" sound is achievedIf you have never heard one it can be best described as a Fender Bassman (which is loosely what the amp circuit is based on) that gets kinda sassy like a Marshall Plexi when cranked. Overall its a very nice sounding versatile amp and its a great price as vintage Sovtek's go for $1K plus. The only drawback to this amp is that the controls on the amp have a pretty limited useful range. It goes from reasonable to waaaay too loud in a very short span on the volume pots. Likewise the EQ's useful range isn't very great and you can turn the pots quite a lot and not change the tone a whole lot. The amp is kinda of voiced the way it is. Also I realize that they tried to stay true to the Sovtek design, but EHX could have upgraded the plastic switches to metal....the power and standby switches are pretty shabby.

Sound
Has the classic sound of a Sovtek MIG-50. This amp and the Sovtek its based off of are highly read more praised for their touch sensitivity and harmonically rich sound. It is best suited for hard rock and metal type styles, but cleans up nicely and takes pedals really well which makes it super versatile.

Features
I like the dual parallel inputs for the normal and bright channel. They can be used simultaneously for even greater tonal shaping. One feature that could have been added to modernize the amp a bit would have been an fx loop, but that would have made it more expensive.

Ease of Use
Its a very simple amp that you can get awesome tones out of very easily. EQ can stay pretty much at noon (slight adjustments to taste) and you use the volume controls to increase saturation, drive and distortion.

Quality
Solid build with high quality parts. Feels like it will last. Only gripe is the "period correct" plastic switches for the power and standby.

Value
This amp is a great deal. Its a very true MIG-50 clone for a better price than a vintage Sovtek can be had on the second had market.

Manufacturer Support
EHX has been around and has good customer support.

The Wow Factor
I think the vintage Sovtek sound is a big draw for people like me. It has that sound that was really popular when I was growing up and its very fun since it is so easy to get killer tones out of it.
