Pairing an open-back design with powerful 45mm drivers, Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa headphones help audio engineers mix with accuracy and confidence.
Overview
The ATH-R70xa is Audio-Technica's flagship pair of professional open-back reference headphones. This enhanced version of the ATH-R70x delivers the natural and balanced sound of its predecessor but with refined accuracy and detail, providing a heightened listening experience with precise imaging and depth.
Fully open-back sound relies solely on the performance of the driver, with each diaphragm movement directly translating into sound - without reliance on acoustic cavities or resonance for frequency enhancement. While the ATH-R70x utilized damping and acoustic design for added low-frequency emphasis, the ATH-R70xa delivers pure sound directly from the transducer, offering an authentic open-back experience and minimizing distortion. This ensures accurate, natural sound with realistic sound staging.
Made for critical listening, the ATH-R70xa headphones allow engineers to make the right decision at every step of the production process. With an extended frequency range, every detail of a mix is transparently reproduced. The unrestricted airflow and absence of internal resonance allows for an extremely quick transient response, ensuring the clarity and separation needed to handle complex contemporary mixes.
These featherlight (199 g without the cable), fully open-back headphones feature streamlined construction and a new headband design, allowing the headphones to virtually disappear during use - perfect for long working sessions.

They sound very good to me. Clear and extended bass, a little forward in the upper mids to my ears , and detailed treble, not tinny, grainy or sibilant. I can pick out more details in the mix, than with my AKG K361. It’s hard for me to quantify but there is a clarity here that allows me to pick up the more subtle effects and processing a producer might be using to manipulate a vocal track or mangle a sample, it’s really cool. Music stages well, a little wide but also tall with great imaging, I find that panning and tremolo effects are exceptionally smooth. Overall I find the Audio Technica R70xa to be very detailed, and I personally enjoy the tuning and natural timbre. These are very comfortable for long hours. I’ve been using them 4-5+ hours at a time and find that they are very comfortable, no headaches. My only two complaints are that the suspension strap is set in place by little magnets that are easily knocked out of position by larger heads (XXL/ 7 7/8)and that the ear pads are a little shallow as my ears touch the liner of the driver. Neither issue causes these to feel uncomfortable for me. The cable that comes with these is pretty standard, no frills, no noise. The headphones also come with a soft bag that is very nice to the touch.I don’t own anything comparable in this price range, so I don’t know if it’s a great deal, they sound better than my AKG K361, Sennheiser HD 280 pro, PC37x, or Hifiman He-4XX. I’m not mad that I bought these.I’m by no means a…

professional, Just an enthusiast. Hope this helps. I primarily used these with the Quedelix 5k Dac/Amp paired to my phone. I also used them a couple times with my MPC ONE+ both were plenty loud.
