If your new to guitar, acoustic, electric, etc., any of the Hal Leonard books are a great place to start. Easy to follow instructions, clear, easy to read diagrams showing finger position. Short of having an instructor sitting beside you, these will show you all you need to get started with the basics, & get you started on a good practice routine. For new players, I highly recommend practicing no more than every other day until you build calluses on your fingers. They will for most get very sore, but once those calluses build, things will get easier on the fingers. Every single player goes through it, it's just part of the process. One piece of advice that I learned 25 years into playing. Once you get your groove going, start getting used to playing regularly, be it casual at home as I do now days, or, if you choose the band route, use the lightest strings you feel comfortable with. Don't make your fingers work so hard. For years I used nothing but 10/46's, 11/48's, on occasion some 9/42's. Until I read a great article with ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. From that day I've used 8/38's on just about all my guitars, & wow what a difference. Trust me, your fingers will thank you, & your sound won't suffer one bit. Good luck. I highly recommend anything from Hal Leonard to get you started. You won't be disappointed.
