Twenty-five years after the introduction of the first Portastudio, the new DP-01 8-track Digital Portastudio makes hard disk recording affordable and simple enough for all musicians. Continuing Tascam's "Capture Your Art" campaign of making recording approachable to all musicians, the DP-01 features the one-knob-per-function design that has made Tascam cassette Portastudios the choice of thousands of musicians. This workstation shatters the confusing page-shift-menu interface popular with most other digital recorders.

Cassette Portastudios continue to be among Tascam's most popular products. While much of the reason is their low price, musicians also appreciate how easy they are to use. Tascam approached the DP-01 by trying to make it as uncomplicated to use as the other Portastudios, and they succeeded. When you combine that simple interface with its low cost, it's easy to see that the DP-01 is a breakthrough product for musicians who are ready to break into recording.

The DP-01 has two mic inputs on 1/4 in. TRS jacks for dual mono or stereo recording. Its eight tracks record at uncompressed CD quality to an internal 40GB hard drive, and a stereo master track is available for recording a mix. Each channel of the DP-01 has a 45mm volume fader, plus dedicated controls for pan, effects send, high EQ and low EQ. An LCD display shows meters, editing settings and locate points. The DP-01 has a USB 2.0 jack for file backup and transferring mixes to a computer. There are analog RCA line outputs, a headphone out and S/PDIF line output.

Tascam DP01 8-Track Hard Disk Recorder Reviews

106 People rated this product :

"Great hobbyist/song-demo machine!"
Feature:
Frequency adjustable EQ (2 bands), cassette-like recorder buttons, decent input pre-amps, aux. send/return, are all plusses. Limited to 2 simultaneous tracks in record-mode, another aux. send/return would be nice, & no XLR inputs nor phantom power, are minor negatives (at this price). No backlight on LCD is unforgivable!

Quality:
Doesn't seem overly fragile, all controls seem solid. Bottom of case is metal (not plastic like the top. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it from place-to-place, if need be.

Value:
You won't find these features on any other hard-drive recorder for this price-point.

Desirability:
Well, I bought one! The blue box is a little off-putting, but otherwise it gives the appearance of a well-made, well-designed tool. But first and foremost, it's gotta work, and this does. I bought it based on features-for-price and Tascam's reputation.

Sound:
Digital sound- hard to go wrong here. Umpteen times better than any cassette-based machine. The built-in pre-amps are pretty good - very quiet.

Support:
Have no experience with the company's support system (I consider that a good thing!)

Overall:
For me, this will allow me do everything I want/need. There are some missing features found on pricier machines, but I can't imagine wanting to spend the money for them. I like it's ease-of-use best and it's blue box least.

"Best for the Money"
Feature:
For the money the features are fine. I think the Dp01-fx is a little too much for only a few more features

Quality:
so far so good. Bought a factory resealed model. Could not tell the difference between that and new exceptt the owners manual had been read

Value:
No need to say more

Desirability:
A nice one would be noce if I could justify the expense

Sound:
Sound is what you would expect from a CD. No comparison to tape

Ease of Use:
Not quite as easy as my old Tascam 4 track tape. However for a digital recorder it is very easy to use. Took me 5 minutes to download song and burn to a CD

Support:
Not needed yet

Overall:
I will keep this until the technology changes dramatically
