"Best for the Money"
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I will keep this until the technology changes dramatically
Sound
Sound is what you would expect from a CD. No comparison to tape
Features
For the money the features are fine. I think the Dp01-fx is a little too much for only a few more features
Ease of Use
Not quite as easy as my old Tascam 4 track tape. However for a digital recorder it is very easy to use. Took me 5 minutes to download song and burn to a CD
Quality
so far so good. Bought a factory resealed model. Could not tell the difference between that and new exceptt the owners manual had been read
Value
No need to say more
Manufacturer Support
Not needed yet
The Wow Factor
A nice one would be noce if I could justify the expense

"Great hobbyist/song-demo machine!"
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
For me, this will allow me do everything I want/need. There are some missing features found on pricier machines, but I can't imagine wanting to spend the money for them. I like it's ease-of-use best and it's blue box least.
Sound
Digital sound- hard to go wrong here. Umpteen times better than any cassette-based machine. The built-in pre-amps are pretty good - very quiet.
Features
Frequency adjustable EQ (2 bands), cassette-like recorder buttons, decent input pre-amps, aux. send/return, are all plusses. Limited to 2 simultaneous tracks in record-mode, another aux. send/return would be nice, & no XLR inputs nor phantom power, are minor negatives (at this price). No backlight on LCD is unforgivable!
Quality
Doesn't seem overly fragile, all controls seem solid. Bottom of case is metal (not plastic like the top. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it from place-to-place, if need be.
Value
You won't find these features on any other hard-drive recorder for this price-point.
Manufacturer Support
Have no experience with the company's support system (I consider that a good thing!)
The Wow Factor
Well, I bought one! The blue box is a little off-putting, but otherwise it gives the appearance of a well-made, well-designed tool.
But first and foremost, it's gotta work, and this does. I bought it based on features-for-price and Tascam's reputation.

"Perfect for starting out, great value for the price."

Overall this is a very good product for the price. If you are just getting into recording, this will take you a long way. Not all the way, but it is an afforable, respectable bridge to the next step. If i had to choose again, I would probably save a little more cash and get the one with the CD burner right in it.
Features
Pretty good for the price here. The best feature is the dedicated mixdown track. You can record 8 seperate tracks and then master them all using this feature, really nice. The fact that theres no light on the lcd screen is terrible. How much mor eoculd that possibly cost tascam to put in? really makes it a pain to use this thing at night.
Quality
I worry about how it will hold up. The flimsy input and output jacks worry me. Other than that, so far so good.
Value
The overall value is really good. This product is not the same as using it's 2000 dollar couunterpart, and thats why some records are that price and this one is 300 bucks. And it gets the job done. I went from my multitrack casette recorder, at $159 to this at $300, the difference is huge.
Manufacturer Support
Never had to use it yet.
The Wow Factor
This is a strange question, doesnt really apply to this product

"great for beginners, not worthy for serious recording"
i didnt mind sacrificing the effects for the price since i have them on my computer software and can export files with a usb connection. however the salesperson told me that this model is the same as the fx version minus the effects so i sacrificed xlr imputs, shame on me for not double checking. i found that an xlr to 1/4'' cable delivers an extremely week signal, imported wav files can only be stored on the hard drive and not played back. overall i sacrificed more than what the value was worth. for beginners its great, easy to use, and affordable, but for serious projects a superior product would be worthwhile.
Value
great for beginners

"Tascam should be embarrassed to put their nameplate on this unit."
Most of my high end tape decks sound better with a decent preamp. So far I'm not impressed at all.
Sound
I am surpised that it does not have the clarity and power of my old Sony DAT deck. Not even close.
Features
Lacks an XLR input. Shame on Tascam!
Quality
I'm sending it back for another one since 90% of the time it won't record when I hit a track to record with. Also, the buttons make loud clicks and this is easily picked up by the mic.
Value
Price is low if unit worked as it should.
Manufacturer Support
For two days I've tried and couldn't get through to Tascam's user support. Seller says this is typical.
The Wow Factor
Blue color is so so.

"The best for a start up home studio."
Sound
It's impressive. As a beginner, you can't help but be pleased with any home studio product you turn out.
Features
I decided to purchase the DP-01 instead of the upgraded DP-01FX because I already had an effects unit. The other things I gave up are phantom power (this unit has none) and the XLR inputs (1/4" only).
Quality
reliable.
Value
$700
Manufacturer Support
I actually had to return the first one I got for a malfuntioning input knob. No problem, no hastle.
