We audio engineers sure are a demanding bunch. We want our mixers to be feature-filled, yet easy to use; expandable, yet compact; the convenience of digital but with the warmth of analog; powerful, yet affordable. You know what they say: ask and ye shall receive. The PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 Digital Mixer is truly a best-of-all-worlds mixing solution. It sounds clear and warm, features an impressive array of top-notch digital effects, and even incorporates a 22x18 FireWire audio interface for multitrack recording, making the StudioLive 16.4.2 a formidable mixing console whether in the recording studio or on the road.

Plenty Of Routing For Your Band, On Stage And In The Studio
Sixteen class-"A" XMAX preamps feed sixteen input channels for plenty of mixing flexibility. Full band setups with multiple singers are no problem with the StudioLive 16.4.2. To make mixing on the fly easier, the inputs can be assigned to one of four subgroups--get single-fader control over all the drum mics, or all the backup signers, for example. Additionally, a total of 6 auxiliary outputs can be used for sending discrete monitor mixes to different areas of the stage, or for routing to additional outboard effects. There's even a complete talkback section (with it's own dedicated mic input) for easy communication with the performers, whether live or in the studio. If you happen to need more than sixteen input channels, simply daisy-chain a second StudioLive 16.4.2 and get perfectly synced 32-channel mixing, thanks to the board's FireWire capabilities.

Fat Channel And 32-Bit Effects--Leave Your Outboard Gear At Home
Fat Channel and 32-bit effects processing are what make the StudioLive such a powerful--and self-contained--mixing solution. The Fat Channel design puts high-precision EQ, compression, gating and limiting on every channel. Simply press the select button above a channel's fader, and the Fat Channel display is populated with that input's settings, all laid out graphically before you. You'll be able to quickly and confidently make equalization and compression adjustments, and because all this processing is done internally, you don't have to rely on any external compressors, gates, or noise suppressors. Input effects are just part of the SudioLive's digital effects arsenal, however. Dual, 32-bit effects processors power any of a wide selection of "aux-send" effects including reverbs, echos, delays, choruses, and more. Each of these effects patches is studio quality, and the 16.4.2 even sports a dedicated tap-tempo button for using time-based effects in live performances. You can even store and recall favorite effects scenes for different performers.

FireWire Support And Capture Recording Software
PreSonus has outfitted the StudioLive with some impressive recording features, and made it a capable recorder in both live and studio situations--just like the name says. Hook the StudioLive up to your Mac or PC and you get 32x16 audio recording over FireWire. Every input channel, every aux, and every subgroup can be routed to the FireWire inputs for some impressive tracking flexibility. Best of all, the PreSonus StudioLive ships with dedicated live recording software called Capture. Capture synchs flawlessly with the StudioLive for making effortless live recordings--when connected to your computer running capture, simply arm your tracks and hit record on the StudioLive console. . . it's that easy. Of course, you can also use the StudioLive 16.4.2 with all the major multitrack recording software, like Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, etc., and for studio situations, you can add multiple channels by connecting additional FireWire gear--like a PreSonus FireTube or PreSonus ProjectStudio--for virtually limitless expandability. You can even use the StudioLive as a tape return mixer to add true analog summing to your digital sessions.

Gigging bands, project studio owners, and live venues alike can all benefit from the pristine, powerful, and eminently affordable PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 16-Channel digital mixer /audio interface, and you can get the StudioLive at zZounds for an absolutely unbeatable price.

StudioLive is compatible with Mac and Windows audio recording and production software including Logic, Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, Digital Performer, Audition and more.

Now that's power!

XMAX Class A Preamplifiers
StudioLive includes sixteen custom-designed high-voltage, discrete, XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers for all types of microphones. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic to line boost is generally a preamplification of over 400 times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results.

All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements:

High Voltage - The XMAX preamplifier runs on power rails of 30V. Most off the shelf op amp based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs and an overall fuller sound.

Discrete - No op amps. Only transistors, resistors and capacitors. Op amps add noise, coloration and harshness to a signal. Discrete designs deliver ultra low noise and transparency.

Class A - When a circuit is running in Class A mode the circuit is always in an "on" state operating at its optimal voltage requirements. Class A mode has zero crossover distortion and delivers purer, clearer and more musical sonics than class A/B designs which are found in most op-amp circuits.

The net result of the XMAX preamp design is high headroom, low noise, wide dynamic range and wide frequency range, and most importantly, musicality and transparency - smooth highs, solid deep lows, and everything in between.

Link Multiple StudioLive's
Sometimes 16 input channels are not enough. No problem! You can use the StudioLive 16.4.2's second FireWire port to link two StudioLive 16.4.2 mixers for 32 channels of recording or to combine up to 4 StudioLive mixers for 64 channels in live performance, with sample-accurate synchronization between units. Now, you will never have to worry that your needs will outgrow your StudioLive's mixing capacity; when you need more channels, just plug in a second StudioLive 16.4.2, turn on its link ID, and your master StudioLive will detect it and merge the buses to the master unit. You don't even need a computer to cascade multiple units-simply connect them with a FireWire cable-done! You also can daisy-chain one or more FireStudio-series interfaces (such as the FireStudio Tube and FireStudio Project) with a StudioLive to provide additional inputs for recording.

"Awesome...Thank you Presonus!"
Feature:
What more can you ask for...the kitchen sink?

Quality:
So far, all I see and hear is quality. Amazing sound. I don't think you can do better for the price even if you bought used gear.

Value:
How could you possibly get more bang for your buck? It packs a rack full of gear and for the money can't be touched.

Desirability:
I am very happy with it and in fact I may buy another so I can daisy chain them together.

Sound:
First of all, the one idiot who gave it a bad review doesn't own it...I do and let me say this. The guy has had little to no experience with the StudioLive so why review it? This board is a solid workhorse. It has everything but the kitchen sink. As a digital mixer alone it is awesome but when you consider the quality of the preamps, the recording interface and many other things you realize real quick that this unit is worth a lot more. I don't think the idiot who gave it a bad review has a clue of what he is talking about. This was not meant to be a studio unit but rather a live unit with the tools to record your shows. Presonus has said this from the start so why is this knucklehead reviewing it as it is just a studio tool? Who cares if it has word clock or ADAT? It was not meant for that purpose. I don't understand some people. This is the best sounding board I own. (I have four). And let me tell you that it records awesome. I don't understand why this guy is so negative. It's only $1999.00. For all the features he's talking about, this console would end up costing in the 5,000 to 7,000 range. I don't think this unit can be touched for the money and I DO have experience with it.

Ease of Use:
Even a novice can use it. I have gotten awesome live sound and I have also gotten some very nice recordings. Very user friendly.

Support:
They are very helpful at Presonus and I think they are on the cutting edge of becoming industry standards in many categories. A great bunch of guys.

Overall:
This unit was one of the best investments I ever made.

"StudioLive...Hands Down It's A 10!"
Feature:
The StudioLive is packed with the infamous FAT channel. This is a piece of cake to use. Simply select the mic channel input and you've got a "rack full" of equipment at your fingertips. You also get the Capture software that allows multi-track recording and playback via FireWire. There are so many features packed in...and PreSonus is working to add even more. Like daisy-chaining two StudioLive mixers together. The PreSonus folks are very reachable. In talking with their planning engineers, there's a downloadable firmware update in the works that would put even more tools at your disposal. The StudioLive is well designed, well-thought out and well-built. The metering and switches, indicators and buttons feel expensive. That's because they ARE quality materials. This is the star of my studio and will be for years to come.

Quality:
The StudioLive is well designed, well-thought out and well-built. The metering and switches, indicators and buttons feel expensive. That's because they ARE quality materials. Built by really smart audio engineers for demanding audio engineers.

Value:
PreSonus has redefined "WHAT A BARGAIN!" The StudioLive packs so many tools into this one package that going to gig means not having to carry racks of gear.

Desirability:
The layout and design make it easy to right to the section you're looking for. Sections are color-coded, LEDs are easy on the eyes and metering is awesome.

Sound:
By in large, I do mostly voice recordings for advertising and entertainment. The majority of my work falls on other critical ears and I have had nothing but kudos regarding the sound of the StudioLive. The mic pres are priceless! There's a pristine quality about the sound, yet not the edginess of digital. The StudioLive offers the warmth of analog without the noise floor. An engineer in Burbank that does the final mix on my files asked what kind of mic pre, EQ and Compression I was using. When I told him, "None," he nearly fainted! I'm using a Rode NT-1 mic with the mic pre and phantom power from the StudioLive and running everything flat with no compression. It's that superb!

Ease of Use:
This mixer has the feel, features and sound of a mixer well into the five or six-figure price range. Seriously. I've worked on far more expensive mixers that are a "menu nightmare." The StudioLive is very straightforward, that even an old analog guy like me was able to figure it out in short order. No in-depth menus. Scene recall. A lockout feature. A user's manual that is well-written. Plus, the support and forums of PreSonus will allay any fears up stepping up to this affordable, digital FireWire MEGA mixer! By in large, I do mostly voice recordings for advertising and entertainment. Support:
The PreSonus folks are VERY reachable. In one instance I needed a question answered and I got right to a PreSonus engineer without voice mail and messages. They answered my question immediately.

Overall:
It will be many years before I consider another mixer. The StudioLive has a lot to offer and to grow with. Plus, the firmware updates will keep the mixer up to date with changes and improvements.
