Phonic 16-Channel Digital Mixer

No longer available at zZounds
Tap the full-color GUI touchscreen to easily access the onboard EQ, delay, and dynamics processors in this affordably-priced 16-channel digital mixer.

This Phonic mixer pairs advanced digital functionality with the usability of an analog console. On the surface, it is a 16 input channel mixer with a set of XLR and 1/4" inputs per channel. The unit also has flexible output possibilities through 1/4" multi outputs, and XLR main and control room outputs. But the Phonic digital mixer offers so much more than mere inputs and outputs...

The Phonic digital mixer packs an entire studio worth of gear into a small, compact system. Delay, EQ and dynamics are found on all input and output channels, so there is no need to waste money on external processors. Digital AES/EBU inputs and outputs are included, which allow for expanding the scope of your system by connecting it to external digital consoles.

With built-in EQs, dynamics, delays, digital effects, signal generator, and meter bridge, this is not your run-of-the-mill mixer. It is powerful enough to suit multiple applications--as a live sound reinforcement mixer, a stage and in ear monitor mixer or for producing professional studio recordings.

"Great pieces of gear"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Haven't regretted this for a moment. It's easy to use thanks to the menu. It would have been nice if there were more on board buttons and controls for things like EQ and dynamics to control them immediately, but there's obviously only so much room on the mixer itself I guess.

Sound
Absolutely crystal clear sound. I'm not a digital enthusiast by a long shot because I get visions of 'blocky' sounding audio. But this gives me very smooth, authentic sounding audio. I use it for live recording, and the live sound is great but then I listen back to the recordings and they're just great.

Features
Considering the price I definitely got my money's worth. I thought there would be one or two dynamic processors but it's actually a single processor for each channel and you can use the gates, expander, limiter and compressor all simultaneously. The delay just a fantastic features for the outputs. It's a must-have feature, but it's shocking that barely any mixers actually feature it! I updated my firmware from the version I got when I first bought the unit, and it had an addition to the delay feature. Also I contacted Phonic with a suggested idea and they said the feature will be available in the next firmware version! Can't wait for that.

Ease of Use
One thing which threw me off was the menu's "back" button. I found it quick enough thanks to the manual but before I knew it was there I was using the read more small buttons on the top only. Since I know where it is now I'm fine but I was confused for a moment. Everything else is easy to use. The manual is clear on most every point. The menus are great, and very very easy to understand.

Quality
While I think the unit could look slightly better, it's obviously built to last. It's strong and sturdy. The body and the buttons and the faders and the controls, they're all very strong. Definitely have no qualms with taking it on the road.

Value
All of the individual functions if you add them up it will add up to considerably more than what I paid. I don't see many other devices similar to this at this price, save for one or two. I jumped at this one because of the touch screen. I'd seen pictures of the menu online before and I got it almost immediately. I like that.

Manufacturer Support
I emailed Phonic about a 31-band EQ and they said that it's coming soon through the EFX. I'm excited about that. I haven't had any real issues yet, but it was nice of them to take the time on a simple question like that.

The Wow Factor
Not the sexiest product, like I said earlier, but the touch screen makes up for it. I haven't seen another digital mixer in this price range with a nice looking digital screen like this. Lots of color and its laid out very sexily. This is an enormous boost in my book.
