The Helix Board 24 Universal is the newest addition to Phonic's popular Helix Board series of digital recording interface Mixers. It features 96 KHz USB and FireWire interfaces that let you individually stream up to 18 independent channels of audio to the computer and return two channels to the mixer for monitoring - all with zero latency.

Pre/post Buttons, located underneath the console, allow each channel's EQ and fader (among other controls) to affect the channel's outgoing USB/FireWire signal, allowing more versatile use. Digital S/PDIF output is also provided for direct connection to recording devices like DAT decks.

The 3-band EQ with swept mids, insert points for connection to external processors, 6 AUX send mixing bus (2 AUX sends with pre/post buttons), and direct outputs for multi-track recording allow users incredible flexibility with mix control and signal routing. Mono channels have an AUX 5/6 shift button, expanding the number of outputs available. But that's not all: the mixer features a dual-position input/output (I/O) pod that lets you use it as a desktop mixer or convert for rack mounting.

The I/O pod rotates out of the way to save space in your rack. The built-in 32/40-bit digital effect processor has 100 popular programs, tap-delay, test tones (pink noise, 1kHz, etc), and footswitch jacks. Low cut filters eliminate P-pops, stage rumble and wind noise. Top it off with a subwoofer output, four true subgroups and individual phantom power switches on every channel, and you've got a perfect medium-sized rack-mountable mixer for live events or studio recording. Steinberg's Cubase LE 4 digital audio workstation software also included.

Sound: Up to now, depending on the band and venue and requirements, I've used Tascam DA38/DA78 DTRS or Fostex VF160 recorders for recording and CUBASE SX3 on a PC laptop for mixing and production. The FOSTEX Helix Board Universal now allows me to record 16 channels direct to the PC. The sound quality is fine - I'm not Abbey Road but I've not noticed any problems even though I'm using the default provided by Phonic. Feature: The metal cased mixer looks to have good visible build quality and so far has been very reliable. On features, look them up - For the money it can't be beat - period. Ease of Use: Why do so many companies with a great product skimp on documentation ? In spite of inaccurate software installation notes in the manual I got the mixer working with my laptop first time. Quality: Finish and fit are fine. Phonic have packed in loads of controls, inputs and outputs into a rack mountable mixer so initially it's all a bit bewildering and it takes time to find your way around - but it's worth it! Value: It's well worth the money being asked today (Sept 2009) Manufacturer Support: Before purchase I contacted Phonic to find whether my Centrino laptop spec was Ok with this mixer.They just quoted the spec minimum - Pentium 4 etc. So no help there. It works fin3 anyway The Wow Factor: It's an impressive looking mixer and very function-rich Overall: This seems to do virtually everything I want recording-wise ! I can use it with my band at live gigs and at my modest home studio
