Overview
MXL Introduces the World's First USB Large Gold Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic it's like having a great studio in a mic.
No mixers, preamps or expensive studio gear. No special software or drivers, just plug in to your portable or desktop computer, set your preferences and enjoy instant studio quality recordings.
The mic uses dual gold diaphragm capsules in a XY pattern together with low noise electronics and the latest in enhanced digital conversion techniques for pristine audio quality.
In a demonstration CD a vintage acoustic guitar was recorded with a famous studio mic going thru high quality studio gear to a hard disk recorder and then was compared to the MXL USB.007 recorded direct to a standard computer. The results were nothing short of amazing; the MXL USB.007 sounded like a pristine direct to disc recording while the studio mic sounded nice but lacked punch or detail of the USB mic.
Because of its high quality and ease of use the new mic opens up new possibilities for direct stereo recording with a standard computer such as live performances in the professional, school and home environment. "Probably just me"
had I known what I was getting I wouldn't have bought it. I would have just gotten a usb audio interface. I believe I had expectations of this product which were unreasonable. If you want a simple way to get a pretty good recording and don't mind a little background noise, this is probably the way to go. If you were hoping to get the equivalent of a pair of cheap large condenser mics with the convenience of a usb connection... Not so much
Sound
This is a stereo condenser USB Mic. Although it generally reproduces sound pretty accurately. It does have a tendency to sound kind of cheep. The real issue I have is the very high level of self noise
Features
Pretty good. I find that the high low and medium gain switch is not near granular enough. MXL includes a free download for recording software which is really simple, and I suspect this is what I will wind up using. My Cubase SX and Reaper seem to prefer an Asio driver and I know this isn't normal for a USB sound device, but It would have been great not to have to use asio4all to get things working. Also, and this may again be an issue with standard usb audio device setup in windows. The systems keep seeing an output for this device as if it had an audio out, which just isn't the case. I own some pretty middle end equipment including audio interface and Mics. This was purchased because I wanted something really simple to set up and use as a field recorder… read more so to speak with my laptop. I have not done more than just fool around with it at this point, but I think I am going to be disappointed. Clearly this is not positioned to be used like I want to use it. I was hoping this thing would be clear and quiet. It is sort of clear but definitely not quiet.
