HD Amp Modeling

HD amp models defy the accepted standard. They allow you to record with previously unachievable realism.

Creating these HD amp models was no small feat. Line 6 mixed 15 years of amp modeling experience with 2 years of research and development to build an amp modeling technology from the ground up. During that time, Line 6 hunted down 16 incredible amplifiers and -- with the help of some of LA's top tube amp experts -- restored each one back to peak condition. The modeling technology uses 10 times more amplifier information than before, read more including single-ended class A tube stages, class AB push/pull interactions, power supply behavior, and more. The result is exceptional warmth, feel, sustain and articulation for your recordings.

Tube amp fanatics have long enthused that their favorite stacks and combos aren't merely "amps" but instruments themselves, with playability equal to that of the guitar plugged into them. New HD modeling takes the POD HD experience to that same exalted level, capturing the genuine playability that great guitarists demand - with nothing to mic up or isolate.

I'll probably play this baby out. Line 6 seems intent on keeping this new modeling format around so I can only see them adding to it. I was directed to load 6 new amps and a tone list as soon as I took mine out of the box as they had developed new sounds and amp models for it already. That is very impressive to be able to get those without having to do any mods to the unit, just log on to the Line 6 website and in less than 5 minutes you have all of the new sounds in your flash memory.

Sound
The sounds are realistic and full. What impressed me as much was the response of the unit when you play. It "feels" like you are playing through the actual amp you have called up. There are so many variations with effects and amps I never find myself at a loss for tonal variations that are appropriate to the situation. I love the editing capabilities of this unit. After owning the other Pods from Line 6 over the years I find this one is by far the most expressive and responsive unit they have come up with to date. I use it for computer recording and really find it irreplaceable.

Features
It comes with a new smaller power cable and USB cable for transferring sounds from and to your computer. All you need is a guitar cable to plug in and play.

Ease of Use
The model ships with multi banks of great sounds on board and 512 slots to create your own. There is a slight learning curve with the functions of read more what buttons are assigned to what function, but it is only slight. The manual is clear and descriptive as I have found all of the past Line 6 manuals to be. I do miss the colorful Pilot Manual cover that came with past models, but this is just nostalgia. Compared to past models this one is a dream though. Everyone has a horror story of trying to use the old pod first time out on a gig. It just didn't happen as it required time with it to program. I really haven't had time to explore all of the things this Pod is capable of yet including running bass and vocals though it. It responds like a real amp so I really like that aspect of it.

Quality
The unit looks sturdy and well made with quality pots and connectors. The design is sleek and attractive and a slight bit bigger than the previous Pods so forget using your old Pod shoulder bag with it. It is just a bit too big. Intentional? I don't know but it is still compact enough to fit in an overnight bag and take with you for a weekend out of town.

Value
I obviously sound a bit biased towards Line 6 having owned several of their past products but this one is hands down the best thing they have ever come out with in my opinion. There are many, many usable sounds right out of the box and there is a ton of room for creativity to get in there and build your own. With the choice of using 2 amps and 8 effects in any order you want to put them in, the possibilities really do sound limitless. I love this unit.

Manufacturer Support
I got a chip for an old Pod sent to me in the past. That was about it. I've never had any of their gear break on me.

The Wow Factor
Aside from being very practical for the budget I'm working with this unit is esthetically pleasing to the eye as well with its' sleek lines and an enticing color, giving it a commanding, mysterious appearance.
