Gibson SG Supra Electric Guitar

The Gibson SG Supra electric guitar takes the classic SG design and puts an AAA flame maple top on an AA flame maple body, for a beautifully elegant look. Split block mother-of-pearl fingerboard inlays and a multi-ply bound headstock with mother-of-pearl, brass and abalone globe inlay add to the undeniably eye-catching look of this SG.

This guitar is about much more than just looks, though! The mahogany '60s Asymmetrical neck profile is possibly Gibson's most comfortable to date. The SG Supra features a Fishman Power Bridge piezo pickup with a blend knob so you can add percussive, acoustic-like tone to your playing for incredible possibilities. Three Gibson '57 Classic pickups provide all the powerful classic SG tone you could hope for.

Overall: This is my 4th Gibson SG and I must say, It's a real BEAUTY! When it first arrived I was less than thrilled and almost sent it back. Seems Gibson's quality control has much to be desired lately. I can usually set up a guitar no problem, Not the case with this one, Besides, For a high end Gibson you would think it would be set up perfectly out of the box. I tinkered with truss rod and action for a couple hours and just could not get the action I desired without fret buzz. I ended up taking it to a local Luthier who luckily is a friend too, When I got it back, WOW! Now that's the Gibson I expected!! it was now the way it SHOULD have came from Gibson and let me tell you, Once it is professionally set up, It is quite the guitar! I own a 3,500.00 SG reissue with the Lyre tailpiece that is incredible, The Supra now beats it! I also own a 2013 SG Deluxe with the tog-pot and bigsby, Supra beats it too! And of course it beats my 70's reissue. So, The bottom line is, Once you get it set up the way it should be, It's is a heavenly guitar you will want to keep forever! Also the Piezo's in the bridge are fantastic! You can literally make it sound like a very nice acoustic/electric. So, If you don't mind dealing with a set up, And your a die hard SG fan like me, BUY ONE while you still can! Mine is the natural finish and it's beautiful. Lastly, Zzounds is a great place to buy, One of the BEST as far as I'm concerned, I didn't use Gibson support but Zzounds support is top notch and they stand behind everything they sell! Bert @ Zzounds is very helpful and cares about his customers. Thanks Zzounds!

Sound: I love 57 classic humbuckers. They have a great break up and clarity to them depending on how hard you push them. I also love the way you can blend in the power bridge with the 57s or can have just the power bridge alone. The power bridge has a wonderful acoustic flavor to it. This guitar has quite a large potential of sound options. The only draw back is the decrease in volume output due to its internal electronics. You can compensate with turning up your amp though. Feature: Love the locking tuners! Still on the fence about the togpot. I like how you can blend the middle pickup in with the togpot. But with the first one failing, I worry about how long it will last. The replacement seems beefier though. Also like to be able to blend in the power bridge or play it by itself. With a solid figured maple body, this guitar is a visual masterpiece front and back. Ease of Use: There was a bit of a learning curve with trying to figure out what pot did what to your sound. The neck feel is really comfortable. Not super slim like most SGs are. The middle pickup can sort of get in your way if you are not use to playing over it. You have to get int the habit of unplugging your guitar patch cord after you play or you might pick it up to find a dead battery and no output. Quality: As said before, I'm concerned about the togpot reliability. I so wish that they would have figured out a better way of accessing the battery for replacement also. Value: When I bought this guitar it was listed (and I paid) $3600. You can now find them for a lot less. I'm thinking though, being this is such a rare configuration with the power bridge and the only all maple body SG I know of, It should become more valuable as the years tick on. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself. Manufacturer Support: I did have to deal with Gibson customer service to repair the togpot. When I first contacted them to set up the return I had a VERY friendly and helpful rep. Once they had my guitar things seemed to change a bit. I had to call them to find out the status of my repair. They then told me that it takes 4 to 8 weeks before they even open the box and start the repair. I asked how I would know when the repair was done and what the problem was. The Gibson customer service rep said, "We don't normally talk to the customer." I thought that was a bit funny considering their job title. They did fix the problem but they also sent the guitar back with a signature delivery and I didn't find out about any of this out until I saw the note at my door when they first tried to deliver the guitar. I ended up tracking down the guitar so it wouldn't get slammed around in a truck or warehouse for another day. Not really happy with any of that other than the guitar is home and working now and it was a warranty repair. I did have to pay for shipping to Gibson though. The Wow Factor: This guitar is SPECTACULAR to look at. With the 3 pickups, the monster flame top and back, the globe in the headstock, the split inlays, and the finish the has a lot of depth to it. You will love to just stare at this guitar. Overall: I own a few Gibsons. I bought the Trans Black version of the SG Supra about 2 years ago. The first one I got was sent back the same day. It had finish problems where the neck attached to the body, really bad fret buzz, and even the Gibson paperwork wasn't filled out by the factory. I got its replacement a couple of weeks later. That guitar didn't have the issues as the previous one. I still own it today. One thing that they don't tell you in ANY of the paper work that comes with the guitar or in ANY product description is that there is a little circuit board inside the guitar and a battery. ALL signals, either from the battery operated power bridge or the 3 humbuckers goes through this circuit board. If your battery dies, you will get no signal output from the guitar at all. Even if you are not using the power bridge and just one or any of the humbuckers, you will not get any output from the guitar. Because the signal is piped through the circuit board, it also attenuates the signal. I have a 336 that also has 57 classic humbuckers in it. If I play the 336 and then the SG, both with their volume pots set at 10, I can hear a noticeable decrease in volume with the SG. Enough that I actually have to go over and turn the amp up to compensate for the lack in volume from the SG Supra. Another thing to keep in mind is that, if you leave your patch cable plugged into the guitar, it will drain the battery and you will have to remove 6 tiny little screws to get the cover off to get to the battery. The second SG also developed a problem, after less than 50 hours of play time, with an intermittent output and I ended up returning it to the factory where they replaced the togpot with an upgraded version. The new togpot has a much more solid feel to it and I have not had any other problems with the guitar other than the signal loss I already described.
