Product Description

In 1954, Les Paul himself is said to have asked Gibson to make an even more luxurious version of the guitar that bore his name. The ultra-high-end guitar Gibson designed to meet Les' request featured various upgrades to the hardware and electronics, such as frets so low and flat that the Les Paul Custom was nicknamed "The Fretless Wonder." The standard version of the Les Paul was already known as one of the best guitars available -- the custom version simply took things a step further for guitarists who wanted the absolute best of everything, from sound to design to hardware. In the 1950s, Gibson described their Les Paul Custom as "the ultimate in a solidbody electric guitar." More than half a century later, Gibson rightfully stands by that statement.

A Modern Work Of Art

The original Les Paul guitars featured a shiny gold finish as a symbol of their high-end quality. But Les Paul himself wanted something that looked even classier, so the first Les Paul Customs featured an elegant, glossy tuxedo-black finish that earned the model the nickname "The Black Beauty". Today's models are available in different finishes that are every bit as elegant as the original. Paired with glistening hardware, exquisite binding, and a unique headstock inlay, the Les Paul Custom makes a striking visual statement to compliment its bold and beautiful tone.

Still State-of-the-Art

Of course, the gorgeous look of the Les Paul Custom wouldn't mean much if the sound and feel wasn't equally impressive. While the newest edition of the Les Paul Custom is based on the models produced in the mid-1950s, Gibson has done an excellent job integrating a set of modern innovations. Every Les Paul Custom is expertly crafted with a hand-carved maple top fitted to a solid piece of mahogany with strategically-routed chambers. These chambers not only enhance the resonance and overall acoustic qualities of the guitar, they also make the guitar much lighter, making it easier to play for hours on end without getting a sore shoulder. Adding to the playability is an ultra-smooth fretboard and '59 rounded neck profile.

Set Up For Rock And Roll

The Les Paul Custom features two distinct pickups: a 490R at the neck and a 498T at the bridge. The 490R gives a similar tone to that of the classic '57, with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary sound. The 498T uses a slightly hotter Alnico V magnet and a specially wound coil combo for a higher output with an emphasis on highs and mids. Combined you get a full range of vintage rock tone with outstanding balance through the entire frequency range.

Features:

- Top-of-the-line Gibson Les Paul
- Dual humbuckers with 490R at the neck and a 498T at the bridge.
- Precisely chambered body for diminished weight and enhanced tone
- Stunning multi-ply binding on the body and single-ply binding on the neck
- Mahogany neck with '59 rounded Les Paul profile
- Tune-o-matic with stop-bar tailpiece
- Included hardshell case and certificate of authenticity

With custom-cut solid woods, pearl inlays, metal tulip tuners, and Gibson's famous Tune-O-Matic Bridge, everything about the Les Paul Custom says "luxury." The Les Paul is already known as a high-end guitar, and the Les Paul Custom is the top of the line. Naturally, that kind of luxury comes with a price tag, but it's an investment that will keep paying off as long as you keep playing. A brand new model may not appreciate in value quite as much as the 1950s models have (they routinely sell for half a million dollars or more), but Les Paul Custom electric guitars are designed and built to endure. Other guitars will come and go, but with a Les Paul Custom, you'll always be among the elite.

Product Description

The Les Paul Custom, introduced in 1954, has been affectionately nicknamed the Black Beauty and the Fretless Wonder. By any name, it has always represented the highest level of elegance and beauty in the Les Paul family.

490R Humbucker

This "Modern Classic" pickup features tonal characteristics similar to the '57 Classic, but deliver a slight increase in the upper mids, for a more contemporary humbucking sound. The special Alnico II magnet gives these beauties a singing quality that delivers on demand.

498T Humbucker

Put a slightly hotter Alnico V magnet into a specially wound coil combination, and you get the 498T "Hot Alnico." With its higher output and emphasis on mid-ranges and highs, the 498T is the perfect rock pickup

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us. "Legendary, and for good reason."
Sound: The 498T is bright compared to the PAF of yesteryear. I like the 498T though. The quality is there, those who rate it down don't know how to set up a guitar or just have an axe to grind (no pun intended). They are made of wood, made by human hands and hey guess what...THE ARE ADJUSTABLE FOR A REASON! Feature: Timeless design. Ease of Use: Ebony fretboard plays like butter Quality: No issues. 2004 and newer are made in Gibson's Custom Shop. Value: Yes they are expensive but you will have a real instrument designed to out live you! Manufacturer Support: Always respond quickly to email questions The Wow Factor: Black Beauty.......
Style of Music: Rock, metal, blues

"The best of the best of the besta"
Sound: I have played over 3,000 gigs and recorded hundreds of songs over the past 35 years. 100% of my live gigs, I played my 1979 Les Paul Custom. And 90% of my studio work, I have recorded with my Les Paul. And yes I've played Paul Reed Smiths, which are fantastic but to me lack personality. Les Paul Customs have tons of personality. Personality to me means when I fidget with my picking, I can get lots of variations of tone. With the PRS, the tone is definitely beautiful, but it's much more uniform. Relative to a 'Paul, a PRS is a tiny bit bland. I say a tiny bit because I acknowledge that a PRS is a rip-roaring guitar for blues, classic rock, Latin Rock (Santana), pop, and Country (as long as you're not trying for very twangy.) I have tried over one hundred electric guitars and the two best guitars I have ever played are, number two, my 1980s G&L Skyhawk (which is a hand made Stratocaster, made by Leo Fender's company, and with pickups wound by Leo Fender himself) and number one, my 1979 Les Paul Custom. I play both guitars through a 1979 Mesa Boogie Mark IIA amp. The tone of both guitars is spectacular, especially with this amp. The Les Paul gets the edge over the G&L because, with the amp turned at 100% volume on gain and master, the Custom's sound is still perfectly CLEAN and MEAN. At those fantastic volumes and with all that overdrive, the Skyhawk is a little bit dirty and, although it has fantastic sustain and thickness, it is not as thick, clean and sustaining as the Les Paul. If money is no object, and if you want a guitar so durable you will leave it to your children, you should definitely buy a Les Paul Custom. Also, if you want beautiful silky clean tone, or thick, semi-crunch bluesy, classic rock crunch, or classic Metal guitar tones, you MUST get some generation of a Mesa Boogie "Mark" amp. In fact, to me, you should not waste money on a Les Paul Custom unless you're going to play it through a Marshall, Boogie, Vox, or other top of the line tube amp. If you want to hear how MONSTER the Les Paul can sound, check out my Black Magic Woman video or my "OA" (which is Hotel California) videos at: youtube.com/ajmora. Rock on guitar players!
