Picking up where Roland's popular SP-303 sampler left off, the new SP-404 is built on a foundation of more: more features, more voices, more pads, and more memory. The SP-404's sleek, silver look is new to the SP family, and it surpasses its predecessor by offering battery-power compatibility, a CompactFlash slot, and a built-in microphone for quick, stress-free sampling sessions. Just turn it on, aim, and record - no cables and mics to connect. Then get down to the business of making beats and patterns, and add extra color with the great effects built into this little powerhouse. Even with all the bonus features, the SP-404 is still amazingly affordable. Learn More...

Feature:
Great...I reapeat great new features. All the stuf you wanted on the orginal sp-303 (which I have owned for at least five years), they finally put in. Tie the old and new together, now you really start having some old school fun. The pattern sequencer is totally where it's at and by far the most useful and important new feature. This along with the ability to resample sounds within the box. Awesome! Have to mention the number and variety of new effects. They must have listened to users groups and had several dudes on the R&D team that used and loved the orginal put this thing together.
Quality:
Pure plastic, but Boss beefed up the chassis a bit. Original had a "Drop warning" in the manual. I have, dropped it, many times : )
It survived, but I would not recommend banging it around or tossing it in a gig bag with other heavy gear, and throwing it in the trunk night after night.
Value:
Would buy if it were 100 more, great little on the spot sampler, pros will take this "toy" and turn it into a workhorse performance/recording tool.
Desirability:
It's cool...I bought one.
Sound:
Hey, for 299 simoleons, the sound is very good, basically as HI-FI as you put in, it's not 24 bit, but who cares for the price and ease of use.
Support:
Never had a reason to call them, heard they are somewhat random.
Overall:
There is nothing in the price range that comes remotely close.

Feature:
Does more than I expected it to - and the effects are top class. Its tricky to put multiple effects on a sample on the fly or during a performance, but I got great results using a multi-effects pedal in conjunction with the onboard effects.
Quality:
The construction is sturdy, sturdier than most I've seen. It looks like a toy, which is ironic considering the functionality of this thing. Those who are impressed by flashing red lights are in for a treat.
Value:
Show me another sampler of this quality and low price and I'll reconsider my appraisal. And I don't want to hear the word Electribe.
Desirability:
Would have given it 10, but if I had the money to spend I would probably have bought something from the MPC family of samplers/sequencers. Having said that, they aren't really the same thing. I believe that sometimes the limitations of an instrument can hone your creativity (that may sound dumb on paper, but in practice...).
Sound:
Sounds as good as you make it sound.
Support:
The fact that I've never had to contact them disqualifies me from commenting too much here, but I hear good things re: Boss & Roland.
Overall:
I think I've said my piece. I'll shut up now.
