"I reviewed this mic as there seems to be no Joe Meek microphone reviews anywhere on the net and as I own one I thought that was"

Feature:
-10dB and -20dB switch for loud sounds. Omni and uni-directional swith. But no bass roll off or high roll off filters as far as I know - which would be useful (the bass roll off has been very useful on the JM47)

Quality:
It's certainly well constructed. Very solid! Comes in a nice plastic carry case with a mic clip too

Value:
For its price, I couldn't ask for more

Desirability:
The design is quite different to most standard condenser mics - and I'd say I prefer it too

Sound:
Rating sound can be difficult with a microphone because so many other factors come into play - mic placement, recording environment, the preamp, the type of instrument/sound your trying to record - so I give it about a 7. I have tried the mic with all sorts, piano, vocals, acoustic guitar etc. It produces a reasonable sound - will leave any dynamic microphone for dead thats for sure - but whether its the mic or how I use it, im not entirely satisifed with it, it lacks the warmth I had hoped for. However what it lacks in warth it certainly makes up for in clarity of sound. No more of the muddy, bass overloaded, sound I was use to with cheap dynamics.

Ease of Use:
Plug it in, turn on the power, set the levels, record...and play around with its above mentioned features to get a more suitable sound for the recording application

Support:
10 all the way, I've had it close to a year and it's given me no trouble. The Joe Meek distributor in NZ is a great honest guy, and would offer great support should it ever fail me.

Overall:
Overall its a great mic for the price - the features are mostly useful, the sound it produces is clean and clear (no colouration) though lacking a little warmth perhaps. I own 2 JM37DP's as I was impressed enough with the first one to buy a second for stereo recording. I also own a Jm27 Pencil Condenser (which is a nice little mic deserving of review too) and a JM47 which seems to have a lot more warth and slightly better quality sound compared to the JM37DP though theres not much in it. But my experience with Joe Meek has been good. Good value for money.

Description

The JM37 is a microphone in the tradition of classic studio microphones. It is a large sized diaphragm true capacitor microphone with a fixed Cardioid head (JM37-DP is Dual Pattern: Omni and Cardioid). This feeds the FET type pre amplifier for low noise. The output balancing is handled by a solid state FET output.

The capacitor element is manufactured to the classic 'con-centric electrode' design, which provides smooth extended frequency response. Quality is further enhanced by utilizing dynamic feedback at the capacitor element. This original tech-nique eliminates distortion, which can occur when using this type of microphone at high volume levels.

The capacitor membrane is micro fine Mylar with gold sputtering, voltage polarized by phantom power. The microphone body is made of machined brass; Connection is via screened balanced audio cable with 3 pin XLR connectors.
