Roland MV8800 Production Studio

What does it take to produce the next hit? It takes more than just a hot beat, that's for sure. It takes talent, dedication, a finely-tuned ear, and equipment that'll take you from inspiration to radio-ready. While those first three elements are hard to come by, the Roland MV-8800 has the gear-factor covered. It's got a control layout that'll be instantly familiar to any hip-hop, electronica, or R&B fan. It's got a rich, non-linear multitrack sequencer, included mouse, and VGA monitor output to get deep into your mix. And it's got a full suite of mastering tools and a built-in CD burner for getting your music out of the box and into the world. This is what production means--starting with an idea and turning it into a reality--and the Roland MV-8800 is a true music production studio.

A Instrument Of Creation
The MV-8800 isn't merely a tool. With sixteen of the nicest-feeling, rubberized trigger pads around, this MV plays like the classic hop-hip sampler it was modeled after. In fact, it makes an impressive live performance instrument. This is where your inspiration starts to take shape. Play and compose with any of the preloaded sounds, including emulations of genuine Roland machines like the SH-range synthesizers and the TR-808 and -909, not to mention a full complement of acoustic instrument samples like pianos, horns, world percussion, and more. Or, create your own sounds by sampling anything you hear in the world around you. The MV-8800 features balanced stereo analog inputs read more that can accept microphones, keyboards, guitars, basses--anything you can run a 1/4-inch plug out of. There's even a dedicated stereo RCA pair with binding post for connecting your turntable and sampling from your beloved vinyl collection. Sophisticated sample editing tools make it easy to trim, normalize, chop, pitch, and otherwise bang the audio you've sampled into workable shape. (If you're partial to the sounds of old-school sampling machines like the SP-1200, you'll be happy to know the MV-8800 has built-in 12-bit emulation sampling mode to recreate that vintage crunch.) This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Beyond Beat-Making
The main feature that sets the MV-8800 apart from the competition is its fully loaded, non-linear, multi-track sequencer. This editing software is more like the DAWs you'd load onto your computer--the MV-8800 even comes with a mouse and has a VGA output for connecting an optional computer monitor. And you'll be glad it does; the MV-8800 offers a ton of DAW-like features, including a 24-stereo-track mixer with full automation and channel effects like EQ and panning. Because the MV-8800 lets you record up to eight full audio tracks next to your sequenced sample playback, you can hook a mic right up to the machine and have your MC spit or your singer belt the vocal hook without ever having to import the project to a computer. Intelligent beat matching makes crafting loop-based tracks second-nature. Use the sliders to control and automate every parameter, from track volume to panning to effects. Oh yeah, there's a huge helping of effects loaded onto the MV-8800, from must-haves like compression and reverb to extras like BOSS stompbox effects and the Roland RE-201 Space Echo. Because the MV-8800 makes use of CSOM-powered effects processing, every patch sounds like the real thing. The multi-track sequencer on the MV-8800 is intuitive enough to get you up and running on day one, but deep enough that you'll discover new tricks on every project.

Master Your Own Destiny
Once your mix is perfect, preserve it. The MV-8800 is packed with a full-on mastering suite to turn your final mixes into radio-ready mega-hits. Dedicated stereo processes like multi-band compression, maximizing limiter, and a mastering EQ will make sure your project has the same punch, sheen, and volume as its radio competition. Wen you know your music is ready for dissemination, the included CD burner makes it easy to walk away with a final product you can hold.

It's a simple equation. Your + Roland MV-8800 = no limits. Get your beats down, craft them into amazing mixes, and produce your finalized track, all from one machine. Order your MV-8800 from zZounds today.

I switched from MPC to MV and I don't regret it. Coming from the MPCs, it took me less than 1 week to learn the MV and now it's second nature to me. Lastly, check out the MPC forums and read the several posts about "loose pads," "crashing," "buggy OS." No, I do not work for Roland - I'm simply a consumer that believes that a company should provide quality products and stand behind them. That's all. Anyway, the MV8800 is a great product.

Sound
As with any sampler, quality in means quality out. With the MV, however, you do get vintage drum kits and a built in synth that both sound excellent. This sampler has great punch and the sounds are highly customizable.

Features
The VGA out is great. I would'nt go without it. The sample editing and chopping capabilities are superior to the MPC's capabilities (I used to own several MPCs) - it's no contest. The MV is built solid and you don't have to worry about loose pads or cheaply made boxes (e.g., MPC 1000). Roland stands behind its products and makes quality gear.

Ease of Use
Look, I gave this a 10 because, like everything else, you MUST learn how to use your gear. Once you learn how to navigate the MV and learn how to optimize the quantize settings, the ease of use is a 10! Note to MPC headz, you MUST be willing to learn the MV if you are thinking about switching - the MV's features are much greater than the MPC's (including the 4K). Switch read more up, you won't regret it.

Quality
Roland's products are study and well built. Pads are nice and, most importantly, I don't have that uneasy feeling that I had when I owned my MPC's - that feeling of "I hope my MPC doesn't freeze or crash or break." Nice. Unlike Akai/Numark, Roland doesn't hide from customers.

Value
It's a bit pricey, but far less than it's closest rival (the MPC 4K). Less money, VGA out, numerous effects, color screen, and a solid OS! The choice is clear.

Manufacturer Support
Very responsive.

The Wow Factor
I own it. If you are worried about the sex appeal, you have bigger issues. Make music by any means.
