"Great value, amazingly feature-rich - ideal first keyboard for 'synth' enthusiasts!"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Great value. Ideal first keyboard, especially for those who are not looking forward to play only piano for the rest of their lives. Lots of features, decent voices (best in this price range) - amazing how they packed so many things into it at such a price!
Sound
It's got a lot of voices but truth is most of them are actually combo sounds that could've been obtained via Dual/Split functions. The main tones are okay-ish; the piano/organ tones are nowehere as good as in the NP-30 or PSR-550 (XGLite is not even close to XG). Touch response is decent, though keys are not graded. However, they are much better than other keyboards in this range, and while this is something that you shouldn't be taking to a studio - it was never meant to be one.
Features
The PSR-423 is overloaded with features for a keyboard of its price, and most of them are pretty decent too! The 'realtime effect knobs' can be used very effectively to create nice textures (rather than just 'toy around'); the arpeggiator is surprisingly good; some of the 'styles' are cheesy but tonewise is ok. It allows multi-track recording too. A fantastic platform to start off for synth-oriented beginners.
Ease of Use
Very simple and intuitive interface, with a concise, to-the-point manual. The 'learning features' (erstwhile Y.E.S. - Yamaha Educational Suite) and some new techniques added to that might take a few moments to get used to, but I haven't met too many people who use it that much anyways.
Quality
Fairly sturdily bulit; good quality speakers (with nice bass response); the keys 'feel' nice and non-toyish; dialler, pitch-bend knob & knobs are responsive and give a nice analog feel. Just that I have a thing against rubber buttons on instruments - but it might be a personal prejudice. The stand that comes free is a bit sad.
Value
At this price, it packs unbelievable value. Best possible starting platform for someone who looks to get into music production/ synthesizers. Piano students should rather go for a NP-30/P-85.
Manufacturer Support
They forgot to send me the screws for the stand. On contacting, local support said have to wait till next stock arrives. Apart from this minor glitch (which, nonetheless, left a bad impression), haven't contacted them so far. Heard from peers that it is more or less ok.
The Wow Factor
Looks slimmer, sexier and as 'professional' as any contemporary high-end synth than the other toys in the PSR E series. Is very portable too.

I purchase this keyboard as a learning instrument, but it is more than a starter tool. It produces some of the greatest sounds, and not to mention the price was reasonable. There are so many different features available to bring rhythm to any room. Thanks

I'm sure I'll keep it for a good year... I bore easily...
Sound
Sound quality is eqaull to or better than my Roland XP-50. It really sounds like a much more expensive keyboard. A bargain at the current prices!
Features
No power cable or any other accessories are included.... :-( It needs another port in the rear to connect to more than one amp....from a sound system mixer board and to your personal sound amp for performances. All the choices, voicing and the performance assistant make it worth every penny.
Ease of Use
Would be Very easy to figure out, even for a first timer...
Quality
The black makes this appear like a more expensive unit.
Value
You won't find a better bargain for all the options that are included on this unit.
Manufacturer Support
Nothing up this point...so I can't comment..
The Wow Factor
It's a black keyboard....sex appeal....not really. It's a practical addition to our band as a second keyboard.

Not bad but the last model was better. I thought the silver looked better and the bass sounded much better. I am disappointed with the bass sound. It is a downgrade from the last one.
