This preamp rocks. Lots of clean gain if that's what you want, plus some grit if you need it. Rocks on bass di, perfect companion for a 57 micing a loud amp, nice for drum overheads, makes keys sound fat. Pros: -sounds huge. Adds a bit of girth to anything. I'd say it's fairly balanced, but sounds huge cause it lightly pushes or saturates lows and mids. -Nice feature set. Buttons for the usual phantom, phase, and pad, but also has a tone button, which really pours on the fat by pushing it a little louder and maybe slightly rolling of highs. Great for a ldc with a bit too much sibilance or on overheads to gently tame peaky cymbals. Nothing beats good Mic placement but this is just an added benefit. -Front panel instrument input. Nice to quickly plug and play. -Whole thing feels sturdy and looks sharp. Always get questions "what's that?!" and love showing it off. Cons: -Maybe a bit too hot. Could use an output control like the tonebeast has. Easy to clip your input of your interface/converter if not careful. -Would have liked to see an input meter also. Even a clip led. I suppose it makes you use your ears more though. Would definitely recommend. Can't wait to grab a few more to fill up my lunchbox.

I have a couple of Joe Meek (old UK made) pre amps and a pair of Ocean Audio pres to compare. This WA12 is outstanding in my book. Bags of clean gain. Warm but not mushy, very detailed. Tested with vocals & acoustic guitars only. Warms up nice with added gain. DI is good too. Very solid.
